Such a controversial subject, yet it is so important to allow the intricacies and moral questions be the dilemma of those involved -- I'm old enough to remember one girl who died in an attempted self-abort, and another whose life was messed up carrying to term!

Women have performed abortions for one another since the beginning! Egyptians did it....Romans did it...Greeks did it.

This legislation is a great idea! I hope it passes.....get it into the private area where it belongs.

Abortion is a matter of health...a decision made between a patient and provider....nobody else's business.

How many nurses, midwives, and physician's assistants do you think would be willing to stoop to killing children? This bill deserves a quick death. Abort it now.

John, I agree with you. I envision "fast and quick" abortion clinics all over the United States...where 13 year old girls can walk in, have a quickie abortion, and then go home and get back on Facebook to talk about it.

I don't believe in abortion as a means of birth control but I fear it will be used for just that purpose. Instead of a woman, young woman, exercising common sense and taking precautions not to get pregnant, I believe we'll see a fast trend towards abortion as a means of birth control.

Diane ----Any professional medical person will tell you the only birth control that is 100% effective is not having sex at all. !!! I have signed this. No woman should have to be considered a breeder.

In the twenties my aunt performed many abortions in her home, never lost a patient. Well she had been a midwife and nurse for many years, and abortions were illegal. She not only saved the sanity and lives of those women (at a cost) but my thumb, (no cost) which doctors, who had initially reattached, wanted to remove, because it had, later, turned septic. Unfortunately many backyard abortionists do not have her expertise and legal abortions are the only sensible and safe alternative to an unwanted pregnancy.

Dianne, You could well be right that SOME will use abortion as a means of birth control. So what?? It is none of your business, nor mine as a mere male. I know, from experience, abortion is not something any woman enters into lightly, and when she does, with the advice of qualified professionals, not religious cranks, it is her decision and should be respected.

"Spreading the power to kill a life?"

You spread the power to kill millions of innocent women, boys, men and children. How dare you while you spit on human rights. Where do you get those balls?
Do you have any foster kids? Legless vets? Advocate low taxes in spite of them? How dare you.

Thanks Ca, action taken.. I live in California and love my state, a forward thinking, progressive one trying to climb out of too many years with Arnold at the helm thanks to the idiocy of Darryl Issa.

I will never be tired of saying this repeatedly on Care2:
I had an abortion when it was illegal, and I am GLAD I did - I have never regretted it for a single second of my life {and I am now 76 years old}.
My GRANDMOTHER had an abortion in Germany, when it was illegal there, and she was the married mother of 3 already {including my mother}. She simply couldn't see how she could feed another child. This is what gave my mother the opportunity to go on to higher education, instead of going to work at a young age to support an impoverished family. And, MANY women who need and seek abortions are married - they are not all teenage party-goers!
My Daughter had an abortion - the first SAFE AND LEGAL ONE in our family. I as her mother was GLAD OF IT and totally supported this decision {not that it was mine to make}.
We must SPEAK OUT to TOTALLY REMOVE ALL RESIDUAL STIGMA AND SHAME from abortions, having them or performing them or working for their legalization EVERYWHERE.
I will SPEAK OUT and I encourage ALL to do so. This is not just a "theoretical" issue; but one that impacts the very essence of how one lives one's life. Women are not merely "breeders". We have a CHOICE of when, and whether. Without this CHOICE, our other rights don't mean much at all.

Carlene V Couldn't access you profile so thank you for the Greenie from the old fella "Down Under"

Dianne O and all the others who wish to impose their religious morality on others. You don't support abortions. Good. Don't have one. But you have no right to expect others to obey your dictates. Please don;t raise the hoary old argument regarding the sanctity of life in the womb. If you are so fixated on that, I suggest you find a way to attack your God when he aborts life & who, presumably, is not only responsible for all child births {Gift from God}, so must therefore be responsible for ALL spontaneous abortions (miscarriages). You can't have your cake and eat it even if it is coated in sugary sanctimonious terminology.

Now that the medical research is in on this question, this bill is a good way to begin to reclaim abortion rights from the wingnuts who insist on imposing their authoritarian ideas on the rest of us. Signed, thanks Cal.

I've been Pro Choice for many years. I'm undecided about this issue and need to give it a lot more thought before I open my big, fat mouth and stick my big foot in it. I'm not religious at all btw and I don't belong to any one political party.

how about making the day after pill more available? Diane O: who in her right mind would want to use abortion as a form of birh control as opposed to taking a pill?
I have found female nurse practioners at the local junior college to be very compassionate and knowledgable. i would trust them to do brain surgery. They want to HELP students NOT punish them for whatever disease or situation/problem they come in with.

Legislators in California have proposed a bill that would allow nurses, midwives, and physician’s assistants to perform the most common type of early pregnancy abortion. Like most states, the California law currently states that only doctors can perform the procedure, to ensure that the care women receive is safe. In 2012, a similar bill was suggested, but was not approved because of a lack of research and a concern for women’s safety.

Researchers recently completed a study that compared the number of complications resulting from abortions performed by doctors to those performed by other health care professionals. The study found that the procedure resulted in very few complications overall, and that it was just as safe when done by non-physicians. Groups that previously opposed the bill because of a lack of research, such as the California Nurses Association, are now considering supporting it.

There are currently only four states that allow non-physicians to perform abortions. Because of this restriction, the vast majority of counties in the United States do not have abortion providers. As tends to be the case when it comes to access to health care services, this is a problem that disproportionately affects low-income women and women of color. Because so many abortion services have been restricted in most of the country, many women are forced to travel to find the health care they need. In some cases, women are forced to wait until the second trimester before they can find the appropriate services, which increases the cost and risk of complications associated with the procedure.

In many states, the moral and religious beliefs of lawmakers have influenced state policies, which has limited women’s access to safe reproductive health care. California now has the opportunity to become one of the few states to increase women’s access to health care services. When abortions are not readily available to be performed by trained and licensed health care providers, many women must resort to obtaining illegal and unsafe abortions, putting women’s lives at risk. California must approve the bill to allow trained nurses, midwives, and physician’s assistants to perform first trimester abortions so that all women will have access to the medical services they need.

Altho it is of course NOT always true, it IS the general perception, true or not, that "Doctors are MEN, and mere Nurses are merely weak, stupid Women."
And, omigawd, do we TRUST WOMEN to perform such an important thing???
Historically, it HAS BEEN MIDWIVES who have performed abortions - which have been going on ever since the Human Race became Intelligent, self-aware and handy with tools.
In many, many Ethnic communities, Traditional communities and communities of Color, when abortion was illegal, it was an OPEN SECRET that certain "Grannies" or other traditional healers were whom you turned to for getting rid of "troublesome" pregnancies. This was the case in many Southern US communities...

Making abortion illegal, WON'T STOP ABORTION. It NEVER HAS stopped abortion - and it NEVER WILL.
An uncomplicated abortion, is actually SAFER THAN A PREGNANCY BROUGHT TO TERM. Yes, SAFER!
The main problem in illegal abortions is lack of sterilization, and resulting sepsis, which can cause death.

Abortion is not Brain Surgery! When it was illegal here in Seattle, it was performed by University of Washington medical students {on the sly} to help pay their college tuition. On the Third Floor of a certain well-known downtown hotel, by the way. You just had to somehow KNOW this...
So, anyway, abortion is WELL WITHIN THE SCOPE OF A WOMAN - or a man! - WITH THE PROPER TRAINING. Which would take a relatively short time!
The REASON abortions are now LEGAL, is so that in case of complications arising - just as complications can arise during a pregnancy or a delivery! - HOSPITAL FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE. Just as they are if a baby is born at home, for example, delivered by a midwife.
Pro-Choice supporters need to support this Bill. It also DE-MYSTIFIES abortion as some sort of "unholy rite" or deep, dark secret thing...
