Eight weeks after the massacre of 20 Connecticut first-graders, a ban on the kind of semi-automatic rifle used by the killer remains elusive -- if not impossible.

Obama will use any excuse to not enact a gun control policy. No President accomplished anything if they listened to differing opinions. Execute what you believe, stand by it; defend it. This is why this man can't do a damn thing- he truly has no convictions.

This is so disturbing and frustrating thatt I can only say that our currency should contain the words "In Guns We Trust" -- I never saw Jesus with a gun -- or even a weapon -- I guess the bible belt feels a little superior to the "powers that be" - what a sick country I live in!
I can't understand why anyone should have an assault weapon except if they're either in the military or on a SWAT team!
If they like to "play" with theese weapons let them go to a rifle range and shoot to their hearts content!

Lee, most of them do go to shooting range with their weapons. Anyway, a good site with lot's of facts can be found at, and I recommend reading the sectiom entitled Alternatives to Gun Control: Enforcing the Laws We Already Have.

Thanks Cal for the link to the excellent article by Tom Cohen and the video clip. I hope more will be done but I'm not holding my breath.

One issue that has occurred to me: several of the shootings, at schools, etc. have been done by minors who have stolen the guns, I can see that the responsible (?) parent did not keep the weapons under lock and key. This especially bothers me when it comes to gun control at the manufacturer, seller, buyer level. The guns used were probably bought legally, registered, etc.. I do really think that no matter who what or where NO ONE NEEDS a Military weapon. Period. Why not just give all even addresses tanks and odd addresses nukes. I do think the laws that were imposed should be enforced and NOTED.

Lee: True "assault rifles" are those that fire semi auto as well as either fully auto or controlled (like three round) bursts and are controlled by under the 1934 Firearms Act already. BTW, some semi autos (M-1, M1-A1 that is a civilian version of the M-14. and AR-15) are all used with the the National Match marksmanship program. All semi autos function the same way it is just some have "scary" features like bayonet lugs that have no impact on how the rifle functions. Semi autos are also used in hunting as well especially varmint shooting. What you anti Second Amendment types fail to realize is the Amendment isn't there for target shooting or hunting but defense especially against a tyrannical government. When we have an administration that rules via regal decrees (executive orders), are busy building up supplies of arms and ammo in all Federal agencies, and seem to have a litmus test for military officers being promoted to high ranks that must be willing to shoot or order shooting Americans. quite a few are concerned about what is going on now in the Executive Branch. Could be why this move to restrict civilian ownership is taking on renewed emphasis right now.

Susan T. made this comment 'One issue that has occurred to me: several of the shootings, at schools, etc. have been done by minors who have stolen the guns'
This begs the question, Have the owners been charged with murder? They after all left the weapons fully loaded or at least with ammunition nearby.
Were the weapons kept in a safe out of reach of children and in fact any unauthorised person? Obviously not.
It certainly won't change anything by making new laws unless they are enforced strictly. If the owner didn't do the shooting they should be prosecuted for the same crime at the same time. Had the weapon been properly secured the crime might not have happened.
If owning a gun is essential to making you feel like a big man then at least have the good grace to behave like one and make sure the gun is not accessible to anyone else.

Noted. Thanks for posting, Cal. DC must be the most dysfunctional place on the planet. They had an Assault Weapons Ban for 10 yrs. before allowing it to expire under Bush. Whatever happened to those sensible members of Congress who voted for more protection of their constituents?
