Since 1986, Japan has masqueraded its whaling efforts as a scientific endeavor--but no more.

I wonder what made them decide to play the cultural card instead of hiding behind "scientific research"??

Yes, this a truly welcomed development. Why play the cultural card? Because it was easier than the truth.

I never believed "scientific research" in the first place will this stop them ?

Thanks Cal. Noted. We just HAVE to believe that this is going to be the start of a cease in all whaling. It takes a long time to stamp out something that is so ingrained into a culture. It wasn't so long ago that here in Australia, whalling was STILL going on and people just took it as normal. That is heartening as it goes to show that eventually things CAN change for good! People here are now appalled by the thought of killing whales. There is big business in whale watching if you need to make money out of whales!

They're as transparent as glass. This is a "face-saving" exercise. They will now have to stop whaling as the IWC (if it finds it's spine) will revoke their permit. That way they "save face", and it cannot be said that Sea Shepherd drove their whaling industry into oblivion. Which they did, of course, as everyone knows. Go Sea Shepherd! :)

Honesty may very well be the best policy, but it still doesn't excuse their relentless murder of these magnificent creatures.

Ask native Alaskans what they think about Japanese or anyone's scientific whale research and they would tell you there is no excuse to kill a whale except for native peoples who limit themselves to 1 year year to feed 3 families. They use their own boat NOT A SHIP that gives the whale a chance. They also bless, thank, and respect whales. Commercial whaling or so called scientific research is not acceptable. I hope this means the Japanese will stop the slaughter of whales but I do not think we can trust it will stop yet. Whales, Elephants, Tigers, Gorillas, Rhinos, Dolphins, and more depend on human caring humans to stop their slaughter and extinction. We must remain vigilant friends.

“It’s about killing whales for the sake of maintaining a cultural tradition.."
NO-The Japanese have no true history or culture of whaling. Only the Ainu did it and they are the true indigenous people of the Japanese islands. The Japanese arrived centuries later probably from the Korean peninsula. They then copied it from the Ainu.

Screw this culture crap. It is the needless slaughter of magnificent animals. Is telling lies for decades part of japanese culture?

Stars to Nicky Melville and Nimue and tried to give a star to Sherri G but the computer wouldn't let me - sorry! I agree - but it is odd that they have basically branded themselves liars in the eyes of the world - mind you, at least they might have a chance now of becoming repentant and changing their ways, as we knew they were lying in the first place!

(Could it be that as many anti-whaling charities say that there are incredible amounts of dead whale in storage in Japan as the demand for it goes down? Might that have something to do with it?).

Yes the world's worst kept secret!!! Now they are playing the culture card!?! They make me sick!!! The Sea Shepherd ships should have squeezed them like a bug!!! You don't have to like Sea Shepherd - but I do!! I love them for what they stand for and how they put their lives on the line to defend the giants of the ocean. However many whales fell this year; it was too many... maybe next year it will be none!!! Here's hoping.....
