Thank you Cal for the history and background. We forget that our fore-mothers that struggled for our right to vote were not just arrested, and given a cup a tea. Many suffragettes were beaten, raped and tortured for nothing more than gathering to protest for a right to have a say in their government. Each time a women or a minority steps up to cast a vote, remember others gave all for your right to speak. International Woman's day is not about any of us getting a pat on the back, it's about remembering that true equality is a long way from us.

For all of those that join together to remember what has been done, what still must done, I thank you.

"IWD 100 years International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies."

So why isn't this a national holiday here in the US too? We like to consider ourselves at the forefront of many human rights movements and this is certainly that. The only other holiday we have commemorating women specifically is Mother's Day, and not all women are or choose to be, mothers. Every day is already men's day and has been since we became sentient, so why not a special day here celebrating all women, you'd think the republicans would be sure to support this since they don't like Russia being more advanced than we are in anything and this would embrace women from the brand new to the most senior. This is a petition I'd gladly sign, as many times as it would let me. :^)

My mother in law is Russian, and this is like mothers day there, but for all women. Hope all women have a great day (actually I wish it was more than just 1 day per year).

When I follow the daily news it seems to me that we are going backwards again. Women bring up our future generations. Without women the world would fail. Women should be far more respected.

I appreciate this article so much Cal. Thank You. Many women still have to struggle each day, and my hope is that daughters, mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmothers will some day very soon be treated with respect!

I find it sad that women still need to be recognized for their incredible achievements not just to this country, but to the world.

Thank you for sharing. While we have come a long way, there is far to go and many who would force us backwards.
