The death of a West. Va. sheriff should persuade the federal government to put the necessary resources into fighting this epidemic.

Most doctors refuse to write them even when needed, so I really cannot see a solution.
Clearly there is a need,or void that is being filled illegally.
what happens to the people who really need them, if all the doctors are afraid to write anything that raise a red flag...this is the result, black market sales beyond belief, and the people who need them get the 3rd degree.
this is so dysfunctional, and just stopping all pill manufacture will only make it worse. The prices don't help, either!

What bothers me is that Alcoholics who kill people when they drink and drive are not looked like the same way people who take pain killers are. 9 out of 10 times someone who takes hydrocodone etc is not going to kill you with their automobile. Everyone I've known who took rx pain pills took them bc they got an energy boost not sleepy or impaired. They took them to get things done. Alcohol just make you incapable of everything when taken in excess. Alcohol kills more innocent people than pills period.. But its legal for an alcoholic to run out any time of day and get a fix.... There is a great treatment that really works for pain pill addicts it's called suboxone. I've been clean for 4 years because of this drug. I see a dr a therapist and have weekly drug test to get my medicine. It is a blessing.... My dad the alcoholic nothing has helped treatment medicine etc still an alcoholic.. But pills are worse than alcohol to our gov because they make money of of drunks.

I can't say I had no idea this was going on; but reading this was still pretty shocking. As one who turned away from Big Pharma many years ago, I've lived in a world of vitamins, herbs and homeopathic remedies for a long while. I knew these pill addictions were bad, but reading this makes me feel like I'm living in upside-down land....with cannabis on Schedule 1 with all those terribly harmful drugs.

It's like blaming medical marijuana patients for cartel violence.

I sincerely believe that the Pharmaceutical companies purposely create drugs that are addictive to keep people purchasing their products. I also believe that many ailments could be cured by a one or 2 month regimen of medicine or one time surgery but the Pharma corps. design drugs that require being taken for a lifetime instead to increase profit instead. Ordinary, honest people who would never imagine doing drugs or committing a crime get prescribed Oxycontin (Heroin in a pill basically.) for pain. When the MD finally refuses to refill their prescription they are already hopelessly addicted. They try to purchase on the black market only to find that ONE Oxycontin costs $80.00! They become desperate and commit a crime though mere months prior they were good, honest people. OR they find out that heroin only costs $10.00 for the same effect (To start...) and their addiction deepens. Criminality, incarceration or death follow. Question is, who is the REAL criminal? The "Paitient" turned drug addict, or the Big Pharma Co.?

Rhonda: I don't know how long you have been taking Oxycodone "As prescribed" for, but if it has been for more than a month, try stopping and see what happens! Most people don't "Have a problem" when they take Oxycodone - The problems start when they stop!
Heather O. : Suboxone works great, true - As long as you keep taking it... Once one stops they go through terrible withdrawals. Not to mention this drug is exorbitantly expensive! As far as I can see the only real differences between Suboxone and Heroin is 1.) There seems to be little or no euphoric effect (As far as I can observe, never having taken it.) And 2.) The Pharmaceutical company gets the money instead of the drug dealer... Just like heroin, once you start taking Suboxone you must CONTINUE taking Suboxone.

ok this is my plan
the Pharmcy's all have pc's and they always check for insure info. All of them and The Doctors offices pc's should be able to link to a main site and check to See if the Person went to another Pain Dr. & Pharmcy's Also to make sure they only have 1 order of that or drug/med. of that type. If insure company's and DMV can do it
it can be done to Crack down on people using more than 1 doctor for the same reason-and getting more than 1 order of the same Drug/Med Also Pharmcy's should do this for people buy lots of over the counter items to make worse drugs LIKE ACTIFED WHICH I USED TO USE A LOT FOR MY ALLEGRIERS -BUT CAN NOT GET ANY MORE AND HAVE TO GET A SOMETHING ELSE FROM A DOCTOR (WASTE OF TIME FOR ME & DR. and does not quite work as well.)
