Flight Delays: Is Obama Furloughing Air Traffic Controllers for Political Gain?

This week, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began furloughing workers because of mandatory budget cuts that kicked in this year as part of the so-called sequester.

I worked with several air control systems in Europe and successfully reduce expenses 10% to 15%, maybe they should call me. And yes, it was through payroll. Payroll is actually quite easy reductions, just painful.

If Obama is as great and powerful as Republicans would have us believe, maybe we should call him a wizard instead of president. Though like it or not, the slight lay offs in the FAA have sure made many people more aware of the damage caused by the sequester.

Vote all Republicans out of office in every state in every election.

If the problems are not there that you said would be..then create them so they are! Obama does this quite well!

they were told where they could cut and those places are where the public gets the most pain. obama wants that pain so he can scream and yell about cuts. since the delays aren't getting all airports something isn't right. atlanta is maybe 15 minutes delay. that makes no sense it's the busiest. the delays are in the areas that are close to dc. why there? could it be it's easier for obama to cry close by?
there are areas of pork that need to be cut for all departments. now is the time to do it.

Noted. Whether for "political gain" or other reasons, this is a dangerous way to play with people's lives. There's a reason to have those ATC's. Many are "in-training" and need those extra hours of training with experienced ATC's. I will stay it was a really stupid cut. There are so many other things that NEED cutting within the over-bloated Pentagon war machine rather than gamble with our safety.

How ridiculous. The sequester happened because the GOP had no interest in a "grand bargain"... or any bargain for that matter. The wanted cuts, period. Well, be careful what you wish for Mr Boehner, Mr Ryan, and Mr McConnell.

Now the cuts are real and people are starting to feel the pain. If you don't like it, blame the party that wants more and deeper cuts with no revenue increases to balance things out.

At long last something that affects the wealthy - so, of course, Obama is doing it just to get their goat. least, that's how they see it. It is a dangerous way to cut costs, however - the total saved is minuscle compared to what could be and should be cut from the defense budget.

I beg to differ with Arielle. This doesn't just affect the wealthy. Last time I flew was nearly 4 yrs. ago to see my brother. Planes are flying over us all the time....not to say that they would fall from the sky without ATC's, but I'd think there is more danger to those living near the airports. Pilots rely on ATC's to give them correct pathways, free from other aviation, to make safe take-offs and well as avoiding mid-air collisions.

The GOP wanted cuts and would not compromise so the Sequester was born. Now that things aren't to their liking they'll blame it on Pres Obama just like they do everything else. Would you rather wait in line at the airport or cut our huge defense budget? We all know the GOP's answer to that one, war mongers every one of them.

I think the blame is clear, and will become worse when it hits the poor - Medicare, Section 8 housing, food benefits, SSI, even Meals on Wheels - this could become quite alarming! - the FAA furloughs effect the rich and those who can/need to fly and are well enough off to afford it -- the next set of price cuts will effect the poor and those in poverty (which wasn't brought up during the election specifically - mush to my dismay) - that will effect far more of the Americans who haven't had a voice - they may yet find one!
Thanks for the post Cal

When it comes to politicians, isn't everything for political gain which they believe will get them a more abundant supply of the drugs named power and money. Neither of these will satisfy. The more they get, the more they want. They sell the souls of their own children for more money and more power yet, even if they gained all of the money and power of Earth they have no power over eventual death. Those of us who are older know how fast time flies. Yesterday I was five and just beginning school. Today I am 70, not rich, not middle class, just a little more than I need. But I'm happy.

Soon each of them will be crossing over. Soon I will cross over.

There's a life review coming up.

I'd rather be me.

Political gain or not, this is a huge saftey issue. Peoples lives are at risk. If something were to happen, then where would the blame lie?
Noted & shared. Thanks Cal.

There you go, rewriting history John, the sequester was not solely Obama's idea. We get that you don't like him, but seriously, continually blaming him for everything is really just a waste of bandwidth.

My understanding is that the sequester was SUPPOSED to be across the board. I guess no one thought that through very well?

I see they have allowed the FAA to shift funds around to keep all the controllers from time off. Funny, they don't mind forcing people to die because they can't afford medication, or to starve because they don't want to pay for food stamps, but when Michelle Bachmann or Jon Cornyn can't land at the airport in their small town they get their knickers in a knot.

As long as I'm on the subject, here's a quote from Pope John Paul II:

"The needs of the poor must take priority over the desires of the rich and the rights of the workers over the maximization of profit."

Yes. He hoped that the people would know that congress was the ones that needed to implement it. It wasn't his doing. Just his hope that they would hang themselves.
For the smaller government people. You don't know what you are doing. I hope you're all flying! lol

According to the late, great Alvin Lee we should "Tax the rich, feed the poor 'til there are no rich no more." Of course the fact that he was rich is a bit ironic. ;o)

Robert, the only problem is that many of the poor today in the United States have been on welfare for two and three generations. It has become a learned behavior where those receiving welfare have made it their family income. Something wrong with that type of poor person when three generations in their family are still receiving handouts from the taxpayers.

And, again, Robert, your last comment was a bit cartoonish IMO. "til there are no rich no more....." well, who will pay the lion's share of the taxes in our country? Where will the jobs come from? No more rich? Yeah, get rid of the ugly toads.....and then you have no welfare programs, no social security benefits and no health insurance.

I love liberal minds....

They want the hands that feed the poor and pay all the taxes for our social programs to....just go away and die. Breathtaking.....

This is Obama's his own hand. He promised these cuts in order to get his tax hike. Are the liberals suggesting that "Obama didn't really mean to hold up his end of the deal? This is at Obama's feet.

Everything Obama touches turns to chaos. Incompetent....
