Rafah and other cities on the Sinai peninsula's north coast have been suffering from pollution of the Mediterranean Sea and its underground water reservoir, which has caused serious environmental and health issues for the local population

It's a problem. Egypt wants Israel to take responsibility for treatment of water coming out of Gaza, but since the 2005 pullout, Israel has not had the power to actually do anything about it.

As for dumping from Israel itself, that would cause problems further north, not in Egypt. Assuming the dumping happens near Israel's major cities along the Mediterranean, north of the Gaza Strip, it looks to me like it would be carried north, not south. Here is a map of the Mediterranean currents:

I don't think Israel would do that to the sea.

That's terrible! They should learn to get along and stop blaming each other for every little thing.

They all do it therefore they are all responsible. The Palestinians and the Jews are both convicted of dumping and striving to poison water sources and resources. This was one of the causes that inflamed the Arab world in 1964 and led to 1967 happening.

How about getting rid of the religious and tribal manure and striving to work together? Oh I forgot. Y'all are a bunch of sophomoric, puerile little children who are so busy trying to one up each other and then blaming the other instead of being responsible global citizens that you will continue to poison your environment and then expect some messiah or god or imam to come down and clean up your mess and give you a new heavens and a new earth. It ain't goin' to happen. You're responsible therefore it is up to you to fix it now. That goes for the rest of us too. Let me not discriminate.

Haven't any of these people ever heard of a WERF Program?

Hi Michael,

I don't think that's true of either Israelis or Palestinians. Palestinians in Gaza, at least, seem to lack the means to treat their own waste-water, and prevent Israel from doing so on their behalf. Have there been reports of heavy pollution off the Lebanese coast? If Israel were dumping untreated waste, it would flow there.

I had never heard of the WERF program, and I am living in the U.S. right now. Which institutions are involved in it?

as with most disagreements, suspect the truth is somewhere in between or a little of both....

Thanks Cal, They and All (no discrimination) others who share the water sheds, soils, air, plants, human activities, consumptions and eliminations, are responsible for the pollutions that ultimately lead to the nearest large pool of water and beaches... Then the other cycles and recycles of this earth come into action!

Why wouldn't Israel be the "go to " cause of all that is wrong ?

If the Palestinian people want their "own state" their government should be able to provide adequate health and safety programs for its citizens and environment. Israel has been supplying safe water to many nearby nations - regardless of their religious/political stands - for those willing to accept that this is a matter which goes beyond such barriers and is important for the welfare of all.
