Along the shores of New York Harbor, scientists are investigating whether this ubiquitous bivalve can be grown in urban areas as a way of cleansing coastal waters of sewage, fertilizers, and other pollutants.

We now have a massive foreign mussel invasion in the once pristine waters of Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra Mountains. They came in from tourist's boats. They've polluted our water and caused a world treasure to have lots of algae and muddy beaches. I hope "farming" them can help in New York.
