I read the link to court records of the actions he and his employees were charged with and they are horrible beyond imagining. This man has the mentality of a serial killer, his "medical practice" just gave him a venue for expressing it. I has nothing to do with the issue of abortion in itself. Any medical practitioner and his "assistants" should be charged with crimes when they violate laws and endanger their patients safety, regardless of the field of medicine they practice.

This awful man is no more representative of legitimate abortion practitioners than Rush Limbaugh represents the average Republican.

I agree with Linda and Pam - exactly what has this got to do with abortion?

The rabid Right is going to latch on to any excuse they can to get rid of abortion. They take this one really bad doctor, who has no moral compass at all, and he's their example of why abortion is bad. In the mean time, they are making it impossible for anyone to get an abortion during the first trimester, want to make the morning after pill against the law, want to jail women who take drugs or drink during their (unwanted) pregnancy, and, generally, want to control every aspect of women who are of child bearing age. Obviously, they are terribly afraid of women in general, and will continue their campaign to take us all back to the dark ages.

The fact that the Conservative Right will use this as an excuse to limit a woman's choice is sad. When will they stop trying to control everyone's life? Although this incident is tragic, it isn't an excuse to impose limitations on others. That mentality is wrong. I am tired of the Republicans taking an incident and then using it to violate the right of choice.

I don't care if you are pro choice or pro life, this is despicable, beyond belief. He deserves every minute in prison he gets. So do his so called "assisants."

This is proof of the ignorance of conservatives. This guy was doing the exact thing that the back alley abotrionists were doing which eventually led to the acceptance of legal and safe abortion being the law of theland. Putting the legitimate clinics out of business will have no effect on the numbers of abotrions, just the safety of them and anyone who isn't a moron should be able to understand that, no matter if you're pro or anti choice.

"This awful man is no more representative of legitimate abortion practitioners than Rush Limbaugh represents the average Republican. "

Sadly, Pam, Rush does represent the hatefulness and stupidity of the average Republican. A most immoral bunch of scumbags indeed.

Noted. Thanks, Cal. Yes, I agree that this is just the tip of the iceberg of what's to come---many "clinics" like this will pop up to serve those who have nowhere else to go, just like back in the 50's and 60's. The wealthiest will get their clean, sterile abortions in nice hospitals because they can still afford to pay for it. If the GOP has it's way, we won't just go back to the 1950's, we'll be back in the Dark Ages soon.....

Thank you for the important article. I knew this is what would happen; I just didn't expect it to start happening this soon. Women, we must unite and fight for our rights for the sake of our daughters! Thank you, Lois!

This guy what he deserved! Abortion is matter how it's candy coated to say it's a woman's right to chose it's murder! Where is the right of the innocent child!? Does anyone speak up for them!? What is needed to prevent abortions is people to take on responsibility to not get pregnant! Abortions are a quick fix to an inconvenient situation and all it does is promote more irresponsibility! What are the women's rights of those sex selective females that are aborted!? Where are their rights!? Abortion is wrong..abortion is murder no matter which way you look at it. Save the animals and condemn those who kill animals but it's OK to murder innocence in the womb or out of the womb that have survived!? God Help Us!

Carol, you can help save 12,000 newborns lives that die annually and unnecessarily because they lack access to healthcare. Let's get behind something we can all agree least I hope you agree with that.

Birth control isn't full-proof and the GOP has made it very difficult for struggling families to take care of the children they have or even to consider bringing a first child into the world. Carol, it seems like your party has certainly put these women in a Catch-22 quandary....have a baby and live in abject poverty and possibly GASP, welfare since the GOP doesn't wants them to stay home with the kids, or don't have the baby and go to jail. And FINALLY, let's end the myth that Righties hate BIG GOV because obviously monitoring every woman's womb IS VERY BIG GOV>

The best argument ever for government owned abortion clinics and not to rely on profit motivated agencies operation with Governemnt subsidies.

Roseann D is so right. In a country, and especially the southern States, that espouse anti Government rhetoric especially in the realm of personal interdiction, they are the ones that embrace the evangelical right for Government interference when it suits their religion inspired bigotry.
when it suits their religion inspired

It's fine to kill hundreds of foreigners in unnecessary wars, but one unborn American child--no, must not do that! The Republican war on our rights continues....

The murders this man has committed are horrific! If the babies were alive and breathing when aborted, why didn't he just call an ambulance to take the children to the hospital to try to save their lives!?!? I hope abortion becomes illegal.

I wouldn't worry about a change in the law in reaction to the Gosnell case. The same thing that killed the recent gun-control push would kill such a change, at least at the federal level. Americans mostly like abortion laws roughly as they stand. There could be a spike in support for greater restriction, but congress now moves so much more slowly than news-cycles (in which the public's memory is, I believe, properly measured) that by the time anything comes to a vote, that spike will have passed.

I'm hoping to agree with Stephen and also hope that the folks in states such as Arkansas, North Dakota and Ohio are rethinking their votes.

This was tragic and the people deserve everything they get but i dont think this is the normal practice but then if there isnt the health care and its not in a hospital i dont know

There are so many wrongs in this and still very few even mention the babies. They were born alive!! Try and sell that one. Not a fetus...a baby..alive!! And this maniac is not the only one. Ever heard of Dr Robert Alexander from Michigan?

Deborah W (6)

Add to Noni's list: Tiller, Carhart, Karpen ... the list goes on. Like the newest money-making offering too: fly-in abortionists that go from state to state: Dr. Cheryl Chastine, IL, Dr. Valencia, AZ, Dr. Nicola Louise Moore, MD. Amazing the scenarios one can think of when a buck's involved.

You can bet that the Christian Taliban of America and their politcal arm the Rpug/Tea Bagged will use it for all it is worth to end or nearly end all access to safe abortions. The result will be that soon very soon more and more women will be driven to other monsters just like Gosnell in back alleys for abortions. Well except for the rich and powerful who have never beeen subject to a single anti-abortion law in the history of the USA, they simply offshore their abortions like they do their money.

Cathe romano (52)

If allowed the right wing nuts will use this as a reason why abortions should be abolished. If this occurs, our country will return to back street abortions. Where not only there will be unsanitary conditions. We will lose the mother as well as the fetus. This is not what anyone deserves.

Really....think of all the Catholics screaming about how NOT ALL PRIESTS ARE PEDOPHILES! Think of all the Christians screaming about how NOT ALL CHRISTIANS ARE WESTBORO BAPTISTS!

You can't have it just one way!

What a tragic mess one individual can cause. Roe v Wade has always been implemented in my lifetime so there has always seem a safe alternative. This is reminesant of the back alley doctors of old and hope this one person doesn't shift us back into the alleys. I've known women who have taken this into their own hands and nothing positive came from it but death and heartache.
