The US State Department has been essentially acting as of de facto global-marketing arm of the ag-biotech industry, along with high-ranking figures like former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton mouthing industry talking points as if they were gospel

from another article..."Meanwhile, the US style of input-intensive commodity agriculture has succeeded in creating mountains of cheap food, but has has given rise to a massive crisis in diet-related disease, contributes mightily to climate change, and routinely trashes the ecosytems it touches." We've gotta get these folks where it hurts in the money belt (and the corn, soy belt). But how?

In addition to the promotion of GMOs, consider the following;

1- Since the 1900's, 75% of the genetic diversity of agricultural crops has been lost.

2- In 2010, The Ecologist reported that "Since the mid-1990s just five biotech giants - Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer, Dow and DuPont - have bought up more than 200 other companies between them to dominate our access to seeds....

Howard says the increasing power of seed companies is 'incompatible' with renewable agricultural practices such as saving and replanting seeds. He says one solution to restricting their control would be through banning the practice of granting patents on seeds, plants and genes.

A patent gives a company exclusive rights to sell and develop a new invention. In the case of patents on plants and genes it grants them temporary monopolies and bans farmers from saving seeds, forcing them to buy new seeds from the company each year or pay a license to use patented seeds they have saved.

3- "Nigella sativa -- more commonly known as fennel flower -- has been used as a cure-all remedy for over a thousand years. It treats everything from vomiting to fevers to skin diseases, and has been widely available in impoverished communities across the Middle East and Asia.

But now Nestl is claiming to own it, and filing patent claims around the world to try and take control over the natural cure of the fennel flower and turn it into a costly private drug."

4- "On Monday May 6th a draconian new law was put before the European Commission, which creates new powers to classify and regulate all plant life anywhere in Europe.

The "Plant Reproductive Material Law" regulates all plants. It contains immediate restrictions on vegetables and woodland trees. (It also creates powers that can be used to restrict any other plants in the future, but the details of how this will work are left for later.)"

Monsanto has made some of the worst chemicals in the twentieth century. None of them were safe. All cause medical problems. And now our government wants to help them take over the food supply. If that isn't the very definition of crazy, what is?
