I didn't think many in America used plastic bags, whenever I am in a large (or small) supermarket there, I have only ever been offered paper bags - nightmare to carry but at least they are probably recycled and easily recycled again (not so much reused though!)

I have my own bags, but am too impulsive a shopper (as most NY'ers are) since we have 25 hour a day deli's to provide for odd whims - like a forgotten potato, or a loaf of bread, we do need the same ban on plastic bags - I think of it every time I find myself carrying yet another "black bag" back to the house and trying to figure out how to recycle this shit! Mea Culpa!
