A 430-mile-long pipeline from North Dakota to Alberta was approved by the US State Department Wednesday. The so-called Vantage Pipeline, not to be confused with Keystone XL, will mark the first time that liquids from North Dakota's reservoirs will flow in

Well God help Canada. 40 people killed in Lac Megantic Quecec Canada after a train carrying North Dakota oil had a runaway and exploded in the middle of the town at 1Am. The oil was carrieded by the Maine Montreal Atlantic railway. Canadian Government deregulation of railway safety is a factor in this accident. Only I engineer on the train. It used to be 2.

Keystone XL will be the next step. The Obama administration either supports clean energy or it doesn't. Keystone and Vantage are symbols. They are icons that the rest of the world will see and follow our leadership. Which way is it gonna be Mr. President? Fossils or clean energy. I don't like what I'm seeing.

This does not bode well for stopping th Keystone pipeline and throws all those word that President Obama said into the round file

I don't think it's a good idea and I'm sorry to read that a permit was given. It's just another opening for the Keystone XL pipeline. And, I think it's dangerous to carry it. But, money talks and who cares if people are killed, certainly not the rich.

Janet R. really has it nailed. I don't want to be pessimistic, but her last sentence has been proven over and over again. Thanks, Cal, for raising this issue.

I, too, have to agree with Janet. It seems the only green the Obama administration cares about is the kind that we put in our wallets (and that the rich put into fossil fuel stocks). Democrat, Republican, it doesn't matter. They are all too high on the fumes of money to care about the planet. How will they be able to look their children and grandchildren in the eyes after this?

Obviously, the companies involved decided they didn't want any controversy, which is why most people never heard of it until now. Unfortunately, there is still a market for gas, oil, coal, etc; products coming out of the earth. As long as this is the case, those who are making money off this dirty energy will continue to do so. Thanks for the article.Cal.

Well, it's all because we let the rich and powerful oil companies run the world! I'd hoped for better from President Obama, to be honest, and he was moving in the right direction. I suspect he is up against Republican obstructionists and is agreeing to this in order to placate them. As others have said, as soon as there's a petition, it will acquire my signature!

Good idea, rather than work on green tech, let's move more petrochemical toxins around between countries in big, leaky pipes to make more toxins and kill off all life more quickly so that it doesn't suffer as long.

If Keystone goes through, we Canadians should send the cheating Harper government back to the Republicans/business interests that helped him cheat his way in, with the first and last load of toxic tar-sand gunk!

Then maybe we can have Canada back from a known electoral cheater and self-appointed dictator we still can't seem to get rid of!

Big business and government officials do whatever they want and it's up to us not to re-elect these people who are being paid off by big business.

Just awful! Every time another of these is approved, it just allows more chance for another future approval. I wish I could believe maybe the flip side of the coin is true: that by approving this, it will somewhat quiet detractors when Obama does not allow passage of KXL. But I've been shown in the past 5 years, that when one thing passes, more is coming--no matter the protests. We have no "legitimate" voice when it comes to our own gov't. Even with all the horrible "accidents" regarding oil and pipelines, both within the U.S. and Canada lately, Big Business gets everything it wants. And, they are so impatient; they only know 2 words: MORE & NOW. Disgusting.
