A sneaker that can help save the rainforest, provide a liveable wage for farmers, and look good, too. That's the mission of Piola Footwear, a two-and-a-half year old startup based in Lyon, France

Sounds excellent , somewhat pricey though and I wouldn't want a sneaker lined with alpaca fur but that seems to
be only the more expensive version .

I have a feeling PETA would not like them, nor see them as sustainable. Otherwise they look like Converse.

Sustainability and living wages unfortunately come at a cost, particularly when the non-sustainable non-living wage products get government subsidies. I won't be able to afford them, but then I get my shoes at the thrift stores.

Harvesting rubber the old-fashioned way now becomes the new sustainable, great.
Very good initiative, I hope more will follow.

Etico is a fair trade brand: environmentally sustainable and no child labour. They make sneakers that look good and wear well - and donít cost any more than good quality sneakers.

Oh, and rubber has always been extracted without killing the tree. It would hardly be a profitable industry if one had to wait 6 years to get one cup of latex! Tapping is a delicate art and a profession on its own. Harvested carefully, a tree will provide latex sap for 28 years.

I don't wear gym shoes but I shared it for those who do wear them.

I love sneakers and wear them often. Piola has an interesting concept, but as a vegan I don't wear shoes made with animal by-products (alpaca fur and leather). Perhaps someday Piola will develop a cruelty-free line.
