Despite years of intense lobbying by women's rights groups, the Chinese government has failed to enact targeted legislation to curb domestic violence.

The US needs to step out of the dark ages in ALL States! Women should be honored around the world...unfortunately, they're not. The Chinese have spent so much energy having BOYS that marriage is out of the question for many women.

Maybe that's a good thing.

I wasn't aware that China even had 'leftover' women given their cultural propensity towards selective female infanticide.

I wasn't aware that China even had 'leftover' women given that there still remains a cultural propensity towards selective female infanticide. The 'one child' policy is another aspect of domestic abuse against women (no matter how young)

summed up:
"The institution of marriage basically benefits men, and when women are hurt, this institution doesn't protect our rights," a young woman in Beijing recently told me. "The most rational choice is to stay single."

More and more people of the feminine gender are catching the clue, that, it's better to remain single than to be in an unloved, unfair, unprotected, and under-appreciated position of wife and mother. The male gender would not stand for this inequity, and neither will enlightened females. We can improve this world by improving our rights as human beings. [those who would give up their control to abuse and use, of course, will not agree nor go without a fight] The men who ARE enlightened will see the benefit of living in a world where people are treated with respect, justice, and appreciation.

There was great to read.Yes, it is true Kirsten, it's amazing these women women survived the risk of death as newborns; possibly because the first birth was a male.

in Japan, women over 25 are called 'christmas cake' because no one wants them after that date. strangely most women mature and are worth knowing after 25, they educate themselves and learn about nurturing, caring and standing up for what is right.

Actually the term "leftover women" is derogatory. There has to someting better to call these savvy, educated, happily single women...How about Content??

"According to a 2012 survey by Horizon China of home buying in the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, only 30% of marital home deeds include the woman's name, even though over 70% of women contribute to the marital home purchase."

OReally???? This reminds me of the not so old days in Europe when women couldn't own property or have control of her own money, job or basically do anything without a man's permission.

Quite frankly I am surprised more women all over the world haven't boycotted the institution of marriage as legalized Female Indentured Servitude.

I don't see that marriage has anything of value to offer women in this day and age. It certainly doesn't provide any kind of security for her children and that was the one thing that kept women in the marriage game for so long. With all of the deadbeat dads out there during the last 30 years women have figured out that if they want saved they will have to learn how to ride their own white horse!!

And we ride without a man just fine thankyouverymuch :-)

- birth control is the woman's first step into a liberated life -

women are learning that we are more than baby making machines

we can decide when to have a child, and by whom

we have a long way to go before we have established ourselves as political equals,
yet, every single woman ought to know how worthy she is as a human-being

it would be a big mistake to use the male model as our guide

we can create in more ways than just giving birth

we have an opportunity to do great and wonderful things that can improve this world, not for ourselves alone, but for the generations of fabulous women AND men who will see how much work THIS generation had to do to make this a better place to live,...

it's always better to see the constructive possibilities and to aim for what is best!

Why do people all over the world want to 'war' on women. Don't they understand, we need women to continue to survive! And they are great companions and friends. Damn!

China is backward, they do not seem to understand that it needs a women to make a man, Chinese have mothers too. So do not treat women like doormats. I am married to an Asian lady for 40 years, why? I treated her with respect and love and she respects and loves me back.

What a terrible way to define a woman!!! I applaud any woman who chooses to follow her heart and be educated, independent and self sufficient.
