I try to always buy organic but I swear most tomatoes used to taste much better. Even some of the so-called organic ones never seem to ripen. It's odd. This year we grew our own and we have them by the bucketloads. They taste amazing! Like real tomatoes again. My mom said that about chicken...that it used to taste much better and when she's make soup it had an odd greasy film that it never used to have.

Unfortunately it's true. But there are many people who still try...and some small communities... :

Some of the older varieties, which may not have had such a good yield or size, or might have been susceptible to disease or pests but which had much better flavours, are not used for big agriculture, and are even hard for the home gardener to source.

This may be an explanation, or part of one!

Sad to hear, can only hope That Dimitris is right and that some holdouts will enable them to come back.
