Wherever one looked in Europe this summer, there was bad news for the Roma people -- the gypsies -- and it's prompting concern that hardening attitudes are making life more difficult for some of the continent's most disadvantaged people.

Perhaps if they weren't involved in living a life of crime with no intent to assimilate they might have better luck?

I have lived in Europe, and experienced how Roma people train their children to break into houses and apartment buildings. When the police caught them they could not do a thing because they used their children. I also had to protect a neighbour child when Roman children chased him in order to to take away his possessions.
I always respect and honour all kind of nationalities, race, and different view points of people, but as long as Roma's behave in this way I have no respect for them.

Bigotry from people scared that the Romas will succeed in something they couldn't.

The trouble with the Gypsies is that here in the UK despite official travelers sites set up with power points and clean drinking water these people refuse to use them.We in Dundee have been plagued with these anti social people setting up their camps on private and council owned land often nex to peoples houses they always travel in large groups with loads of children who do not attend school. They also have lots of dog.s running loose defecating all over the place also human faeces . Recently one of these camps was set up illegally on council land near a hospital. The crime rate took a massive jump when they were there. When they moved on just before a court order for their removal was due they left metal gas cilenders bags of rubbish dog and human dirt used pampers etc. lying in the bushes and plastic bags discarded in the branches of trees. They also left behind nine abandoned caravans and an unbelievable 130 tons of other rubbish which they appear to have gathered by raiding peoples rubbish bins. The council had the responsibility of cleaning up this mess at enormous cost to the council tax payers. The ground was just cleared up when the same people returned and the trouble began allover again. The Council at present back in court seeking to evict them again at great cost to the taxpayers. At present there are fifteen of these camps situated near the center of the city I have been down to see what all the fuss was about and was appalled by what I saw.I'm afraid that I have no sympathy with these lay abouts and stricter laws are needed to deal with them.

What could it be: stereotyping, fear. A sense of not belonging anywhere or being recognised as a group. What about organisations such as The United Nations or Human Rights that were set up for the very purposes of protecting the neglected & wronged! Terrible & sad.

I think Alfre's story pretty summed up the reason for this resentment.

I just watched Latino Americans - a series on PBS.
It is really worthe watching - can be viewed on line.

It goes way back to the arrival, and historical context, of people arriving, at different times, for different reasons, to the U.S. from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

This is an old story, of how local people, all of them - react, initially and/or over time, with changing demographics and economies.

It's more than fear, alone, it's the sense of preservation spun into a false competition that sadly translates, often, into persecution or prejudice, as well.

Displaced and struggling communities and youth turn on new comers, patterning after others and adults, when they perceive new arrivals as threatening.

This is not usually the case, however. Local culture and ethnic groups may examine their own cultural background and history, and remember that in America, anyway, most people are descended from immigrants.

The early Mexican Americans faced considerable racism, and exploitation - and, of course, all Native American people.

Jealousy, revenge and colonialist rule in the Americas parallel conquests elsewhere - and go back too long to tell. People never lived in peace, under oppressive and repressive control.

Psalm 21: emblematic of violent attitudes, in the Old Testament, that either promote or condone violence, apparently, "God willing."

The nature of man, and it's relevance to conflict and war, rides on decisions/choices between cooperation or separatism and ostracism.

Notions of superiority and actions that marginalize, or destroy people and their cultures, have a very long impact, ultimately, over time.
