You don't have to be an animal expert to help out at your community's shelter. You just need to have the time and desire to lend a helping hand. And it doesn't have to be a lot of time, either

Something as simple as a donation of pet food, newspapers or toys is good, too.

These are fine. But, if you cannot volunteer, shelters always need: newspaper, paper towels, pillow cases, sheets, litter boxes,. Toys are not really a priority; dog treats are. If the shelter has a feral colony, any brand of cat food will do, dry food too. Also, clay litter.
Of course, if you have a spare hald hour, petting a few cats/kittens would be a great help. Brushing would be an incredible help as well.

i make animal blankets. some place will always need them, just a matter of which shelter.
i agree with allan - you don't have to be an official volunteer to give them some attention. many regular volunteers don't have time for that. regular brushing isn't a priority when other animals need baths or treatments.

and goodsearch.com - get them to register there. that way people who don't have money to donate directly can use the search engine to raise money in their spare time.

I take towels, sheets, soap, cleaning products, etc.
The hardest part about going to a shelter is having to leave all those animals behind and knowing that they would love to have a loving family to care for them and not all of them get that chance.
