I dont actually think he meant it to come out like that...but now he will be more careful how he says things..and i suppose he was speaking English.

I wonder if he would enjoy having his face smashed? I don't think so, and as a member of the police he either meant what he said or needs a course in diplomacy. I signed the pledge.

A 'foot in mouth' moment... Did he mean harm or insult? I doubt it, but given his position, he should think more carefully before he speaks.

""It is sickening that a man who is in charge of several rape investigations should use such an analogy," Karat told reporters. "He should be prosecuted for degrading and insulting women."

This was part of the article read, link and thought this would be an interesting afterthought with some points pro and con.

The problem with anti-rape underwear
This modern-day chastity belt is yet another product of a society that blames victims rather than rapists

"Sadly, resorting to literally locking away our vaginas in order to prevent rape indicates just how much work there is for us to do in the fight against rape culture. A modern-day chastity belt demonstrates just how little women's sexual rights have progressed since medieval times."

One of the ways to combat the culture of rape in all countries is to teach the boys
that it is NOT ok to assault and rape any girl/woman. Education.

It might be, as Jill said, that the man didn't mean to say what he seems to be saying if you take this phrase out of it's context.

He was talking about betting, illegal in India but widespread, and was asked what he thought of the solution of legalizing it (betting).

And then he gives this lousy answer, with which he meant to say (it seems):" betting is illegal, but as (we) can't prevent it, well, let's go and legalize it, so we can enjoy it (betting) legally".

He just took a terribly wrong example to paraphrase his answer, and -at second view- all he did wrong (besides taking the risk of being wrong-cited) is that he put illegal betting on the same level as rape.

Which are two quite different things.

And he wasn't saying he proposed to legalize rape either.

But he should surely think a bit more and a lot better before speaking out.

Love Raynette's comment! That this was the best analogy that came to this man's mind shows a real lack of imagination. I should think that all Indian men would do well to refrain from any remarks about rape that do not condemn it in unequivocal terms. He stomped on a raw nerve here.

I also don't think it was malicious, I think it was dumb. But, you know, I wouldn't want a dumb detective investigating my case any more than I'd want a malicious one.

Wonder what he would say if he were raped? Would he sit back and enjoy it? He shouldn't be allowed to have a job with the public unless it is sewer cleaner.

I have read an article in which it was written in another way, and he (if I remember right) used it as a comparison, and I am afraid somebody wants to get rid of him.
On the other side, if it is true, he certainly should not have his job.

Noted - I personally have heard good ole boys saying the exact same, utterly STUPID COMMENT! That a "man" in his position would make such asinine analogy says a LOT about his beliefs. Now if it his mother, wife, daughter or son, what would he say then? Surely not "you laid back and enjoyed it?" Must say though I truly admire Indian women in that they are organizing and fighting back! More so than women in the USA. Ladies we must UNITE and fight for our rights!

The man was "merely" using a statement that has almost become "proverbial", "lie back and enjoy it", it just kindof springs to mind automatically. This is the way he and ALL English-speaking older generations for that matter, were brought up! It was just wired into the brain as a statement. I've heard it all MY life...

When you're brought up that way, so that certain "verbal shorthand" words are part of your brain as well as your culture, it takes a real effort, and a real CONSCIOUSNESS, to NOT use such words and expressions!

The automatic, mindless way is to just say whatever pops into your mind first, from what you've heard over & over again all your life.
The THINKING way, is to have this sort of expression in the back of your mind, where it's lived all your life, but to CONSCIOUSLY STOP ONESELF from using it like others do!

It is RIGHT that this man is being CONDEMNED FOR OPENING HIS MOUTH AND SAYING WHATEVER CAME OUT WITHOUT THINKING. It will teach others to SUPPRESS what they've been taught and heard all their lives, and to think and express themselves in a NEW, MORE ENLIGHTENED WAY.
"Engage brain before opening mouth."
In instances of TRADITIONAL SEXISM, that's truer and more necessary than ever, now!

Ye Gods what is wrong with you all? The man NEVER suggested that He was using an analogy and remember he was either using English as a second language or the interpretation came out slanted in the wrong direction.

This is the OED definition of rape: 'the crime, typically committed by a man, of forcing another person to have sexual intercourse with the offender against their will'.

Just thought I should check that it still means what it used to, as one hears so much about women 'asking to be raped' and recommendations that victims 'enjoy it'. Impossible, because of that phrase 'against their will'. Contradiction in terms.

Maybe you can have it so only people that read the article can comment on it. For example, from the article: ""Do we have the enforcement?" Sinha said, according to The Guardian, after being asked if sports betting, which is banned in India but widespread, should be legalized. "It is very easy to say that if you can't enforce it, it's like saying if you can't prevent rape, you [should] enjoy it."

Though insensitive and weird, his comment wasn't actually suggesting women should enjoy rape, but his subsequent apologies are falling on deaf ears. Many Indian citizens have been on edge about sex assault and rape since a 23-year-old woman died of internal injuries after a brutal gang rape by six men in December. In that crime, four men were sentenced to death, a juvenile was convicted, and the alleged ringleader hanged himself behind bars."
