BHP is one of the largest mineral resource companies in the world. They will pursue this project in the cheapest way possible (open-cut) to maximise profits for their shareholders, without regard to the inevitable environmental impacts (Indonesian "environmental protection" leaves a lot to be desired) and negative effects on the indigenous population, who undoubtedly will not gain any benefit from the project or BHP.
