This is soooo sad. Whale sharks are gentle giants that don't hurt anything -- filtering plankton and krill for food. It's ridiculous to be killing endangered species for an unspecified health benefit that doesn't really exist, so some insecure wahoo can feel more "virile."

These gentle giants are a protected species in Australia They do not have the killing instinct of their cousins. There is no reason in the world they should be harmed. This is one more black mark against a country that already has a shameful record of animal cruelty.

This is awful, and sickening; but kudos to that local conservation group who did the investigation and have proof.

Taking whale sharks is illegal in China -- I believe they're a signatory to CITES -- so what action will be taken against this factory, and how quickly?

This news sad as it is ,is not surprising when live fish are flashed on a grill and served at the tables of rich Chinese business men who then consume the fish while it is still flapping about on the plate.

The Chinese have one of the worst records of any country towards all sorts of animals. Yet we buy all their junk to make them affluent.

It would have to have been found in China, to me the worst place on earth for brutal, henious cruelty to animals. I don't buy any products produced in this country BOYCOTT CHINA. Thanks Cal.

I don't think our slaughter houses are much better. We have to BE the change if we want others to change. No other way...

Sometimes I feel like china is going to go and wipe so much of our sealife off this planet. They are being so selfish. Other countries are trying to preserve these endangered animals and they are just doing this!

The mentality and brutality of the human specie is absolutely disturbing and what is more disturbing is other species on this planet must suffer from this behavior. Totally unacceptable. Thanks Cher!

In 2 years China is said to be the most powerful country in the world... yet it is so backwards in human rights, environmental ,product quality etc.

Why does this not surprise me..., China at it again..., may this intolerably obscene behaviour attract the worst karma. Very, very sad to read of this factory.

Totally agree with Kamia and Boods. Whale sharks are gentle, plankton/krill filtering, giants, who do no harm to other higher order species. They are very beautiful. That they are being processed for shark oil for cosmetics and body parts for soup, makes my blood boil, and makes me want to scream with rage and cry at the same time. (I have disturbing images of beating the Li brothers to a bloody pulp in my head now, as a result of this story...., will have to go meditate to restore calm).

Noted, thanks Cal for posting.
