This would be devastating to the region. I only hope this petition and the actions of concerned citizens raises the amount of awareness needed to stop Ecuador's government from this "quick grab of cash" that will ultimately end in another environmental disaster. Once again Cal, thankyou for enlightening us. Signed and noted. Good luck!!!!

Yet another case of profits before environment. When will people value unique eco-systems above oil production, mining etc.? Trouble is if the world's population continues to consume oil products (& that isn't limited to fuel products like petrol and kerosene) countries and companies are going to continue to invest in projects to produce the stuff, and if prices rise more marginal projects become viable. In these circumstances it's difficult to realise the dream of valuing the environment above such projects.

Yes, Ben when will it ever end? I sometimes think the whole world has to be completely stuffed before the wider community thinks about the natural environment. By then most animals would be extinct because of humans, and then only when the existence of humans is in perilous harm, they may act, but then it will be too late.
All we, as intelligent friends of the earth can do is to continue to do our best and not be dismayed by the greed and apathy out there. At least we tried, and hopefully do some good.
