The number of "forcible rapes" that get reported at four-year colleges increased 49 percent between 2008 and 2012. That's the finding of an analysis by NPR's Investigative Unit of data from the Department of Education.

Normally, when things are counted right, things are worse than they seem. But it's the only way to have the facts or what is required to fix the problems.

Rape in U$A:
" What percentage of rapists spend even one night in jail ?
Half of them ? 20% ?
Try 6 % ! "
--Derrick Jensen & Stephanie McMillan (who usually do know their numbers) in their 2012 book "The Knitting Circle Rapist Annihilation Squad" ) ((AND i'm afraid this probably refers to *reported* rape cases only))

(In the U.S., ) " Men in prison [horribly endangered as they are (sometimes presented)] are less likely to be raped than women in general. " -- D.J.
--
" We don't allow 'insanity' as a defense [for rape]. We rather assume that the crime proves insanity. And we space the perpetrator. " -- R.A.Heinlein (quoted from memory, probably in "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress")

Reporting Must be done and prosecutions have to happen if this will ever get better. It's been under reported for decades . . . .

By next fall, all schools around the country must comply with a new federal law, the Campus SaVE Act, which demands more assault prevention education and better investigations. I certainly hope this helps, as it has been a problem for many years. Women & also Men must be educated in the fact that there is someone to talk to regarding being a rape victim, and they must also understand that it is not their fault, and learn not to feel ashamed nor punish themselves by cutting themselves off from friends and family.
Thank You Cal.

For far too long Universities and Colleges have sought to cover up cases of rape and discouraged victims from contacting the police in the mistaken idea that to do so damages the reputation of their institutions. They have to accept much of the blame.

This indeed horrible and points to the need to teach respect at home and discipline in the lower grades. The old days of school uniforms and respect for adults need be reinstated as well. On college campuses the state of dress (make that undress) would have earned an X rating in the 60s. Couple that with the high testosterone level of that age group and we are asking for such horrors to happen. We need to fix the source of the problem and not just the symptoms. That's where the administration and NPR fails.
