The children were likely buried in secret in a concrete tank alongside the St. Mary's Mother and Baby Home, which was run by nuns in Tuam, Galway for a period of 36 years. The home closed in 1961.

Yes, the movie "Philomena." really told it as it was back then. A very dark period in our history. Thanks for sharing this with us, Cal.

There are more cases like this in other places. There was a boy's home where many boys went missing somewhere here in the USA, I can't remember exactly where.

They probably starved the mothers as punishment for their sins....therefore creating less of a chance that the infants would be born healthy

More great hits brought to us by those holy people at the Catholic Church.

Isn't this the same religion that says children deserve the chance to live and that they are all sacred? It sounds like a very hard place to have been.

Never think for an instant that this has never happened on this side of the Big Pond. Or that it isn't going on somewhere in the world.

I remember hearing this story a few years ago and it repeats every once in awhile. I think the first time I ever heard of it was a story I read about it here on Care2. After that I looked it up and found further atrocities that happened here all while supposedly under the rule of nuns and the church, which told me this was another horrible place of secrets kept by so called do gooders that were really torturing people and children.

Some people have trouble grasping that "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger," even if true (don' let me start), doesn't mean that they are supposed to personally dish out suffering to make people stronger. That generally leads to "Ooops! that wasn't supposed to kill you, it was supposed to make you stronger. Darn! Oh well, my intentions were good."

Thank-you for posting this Cal. The 'Dark Ages' apparently lasted much longer than we thought. I don't think the Catholic church can be held responsible as others have said before. Every religion, regardless of where it is dominant around the world, has their own 'dark' side & it seems that it is imposed on the innocents who cannot defend themselves. And when it is the results are imposed the results can only be profoundly tragic & horrific.

Unfortunately, this is what the alternative is to a society that takes away a woman's reproductive rights.

The babies died from neglect, malnutrition, and disease.

and all under the auspices of the church of rome where the teachings of Jesus take second place--- Does this mean the Roman Catholic church is not a Christian Church

Everyone should see Philomena, about the abuses of the Magdalen Laundries, where nuns took babies and had them adopted for big money and always kept the young mothers from ever finding them

Could this be the tip of the iceberg? Surely there is more in other places and what will be done with this episode. Sickening, truly sickening. It just reinforces my beliefs.

Maybe this should be shown to the Republicans that want to do away with safe and legal abortions. You see, if a baby can not be cared for, this is the systems that are put in place. Is this what they would prefer?

The well to do always escape such situations. They paid others to take their children if they didn't want them, or went abroad had their children and a member of the family who couldn't have a child went with them, came back with the baby. Many married sisters became the Mothers to their siblings children. However, the poor did not have the funds to handle things in a better way, so places like this became their plight.

These photos remind me of the ones concerning the American Indians and the horrible boarding schools they were sent to. For photo opportunities or when important officials showed up, they always had the children in decent clothes and a good meal set before them. Once the officials or photographer left, the good clothes had to come off and it was back to eating poorly again.

Many of those Boarding Schools had unmarked burial grounds which are now being unearthed as the people who went there are daring to speak out or perhaps people are at least believing them now. I placed a story on one of those hell holes awhile ago. If anyone is interested.
Mass Genocide of Mohawk Children

Thank you for posting. As members of society we must never forget this or any of these places that abused children. For when we forget or do not believe it these House of Horrors will raise their ugly heads again. Last Boarding School shut down only recently as 2007 in the USA and in the 1990's in Canada, so wasn't that long ago.
