Good to know but Abbott & his govt do not care about protections for native ecosystems, old growth forests, The Barrier Reef, etc, etc, they just repealed the Carbon Tax !

Wow, "On Tuesday a prominent group of conservation scientists condemned the Australian government's". Who would imagine that would ever happen?

Every country has the leaders it deserves. NOT in the case of Australia. This man Abbot is only concerned with money and balancing the books. He has an environment minister what purpose does he serve?. If the desecration of this land continues in a few years it will become like the Sahara, only worse as it will be highly contaminated ,the little water polluted and the sea a swarm of jelly fish. The wild astonishing beauty of this land shall be gone for ever along with it's bewildering ,unique wildlife. In England Mrs Thatcher was very well liked and held in power by the people, then she decided she would introduce The Poll Tax. Protests, marches, sit in's,clashes with the authority's eventually brought this woman down. Australians must be strong and fight this man tooth and nail by any means to stop the complete destruction of their beautiful unique country. Good Luck to you all .Do it NOW not TOMORROW when it will be too late.

I would expect a greater sense of environmental vulnerability from Australia than this. You have too much unique ecological variety to risk losing.

Noted and thank you Cal. Our federal government has the mind set from the 1950's. All our scientists are under threat of losing their jobs. We are already losing them overseas. We just have to keep fighting and our conservation commitment by the population is growing. At the moment a lot of what is happening appears hopeless. Liberals have always raped, pillaged and plundered our country. While I cry for my country I and many others will not give up and somehow we will win. Mother Nature know how to pay us back, it is only a matter of time.

Noted and shared with thanks Cal. Seems as though the Australian Prime Minister and the Canadian Prime Minister are making the same kind of moves on the environment. It is heartbreaking to see what is happening to the Great Barrier Reef!

Unfortunately I'm not suprised at anything this *#@$ LNP government does. I support GetUp! Australia, we are doing everything in our power to oppose, publicise and stand up for our treasured environment. I'm so sad at this point in history, to have to fight these huge battles against greedy idiots, when all that is scientific and logical as information, is freely and widely available. Thank you Cal for posting.

Tony Abbott only got in by a narrow margin, and I know even people who voted for him are appalled by his decisions. I certainly wasn't one of them! It's all very well saying vote him out, but we can't do that for a couple of years. In the meantime he is wrecking the environment.

It's good to see scientists speaking up for what they believe - it's happening a fair bit lately.

The reach of Big Oil, Big Coal, etc is indeed global. Mining for oil, coal and uranium is going forward as fast as it can. The US is building a very large US military base in the northern part of Australia to protect these endeavors. Isn't that proof enough that our government is no longer ours..
