Europe's largest ethnic minority--also known as gypsies--has long endured bigotry and abuse. This year, they've been a boon to rightwing politicians who've used them to garner support for anti-immigration policies and achieve significant electoral victories

Judging by the length and detail in the report from the unknown hack from VICE News, he or she spent little time investigating this complex issue. No mention is made of decades of disgusting Marxist governments in Romania and Bulgaria that whilst enriching the leaders caused extreme poverty for everyone else and not only the Roma people. I doubt if this "holier than thou" reporter has ever experienced first-hand or has even spoken to anyone who has had the doubtful pleasure of experiencing a Roma encampment next door to their property. I doubt if she or he has ever been pick-pocketed by a tiny Roma kid on the train and then verbally and physically abused when they try to recover their stolen wallet or passport. There have been some extensive programmes on British TV on the huge reluctance by Roma to integrate into the communities they choose to travel to in Italy, UK, France, Spain etc., their reluctance to allow their children an education and their practises of child marriage and use of children (their own and others) as unpaid petty criminals in a kind of a “Fagan” community. Even British Gypsies have been disgusted by their behaviour and reluctance to change.

Ignorantly claiming the “High moral ground” and pontificating is a far cry from first-hand experience and actually making a physical effort to help.

As the resources dry up with austerity measures, as the Greedy Ones take more and leave less for everyone else, it is only understandable that those on the bottom will feel pitted against each other for what is left. We need around the world to offer opportunities for everyone so they can live in dignity so those with less will not infringe on others rights of others. Desperate people do desperate things in order just to survive. It should be more than in fact merely surviving, with a more fair way to treat all people in all Countries there could then be less conflicts between each other and for everyone to live in peace.

Cal, I believe in live and let live, but I have experienced Roma people in a very different way in Germany. They are teaching their children to break into German houses while they are gone, and when the police catches them, they have to release them because they are children. I have witnessed by myself how Roma children chased our children, and tried to take away their toys.
So there is a reason why people aren't too excited about Gypsies.
Thanks for sharing.

"Europe's largest ethnic minority--also known as gypsies", and thieves, pick pockets, travelers (though today, many are not).

Nice to see comments from people like Bernard and Birgit--who have actually experienced the ''joys'' of interacting with the Roma.. These are NOT the ''innocent victims'' some articles would have us believe. I've seen the aftermath of their ''camps'' and fully understand why people are so unhappy to see them arrive.

I've also known two families here in the States, who make no secret of the fact that their ''fortune telling'' business is a scam, based on years of knowledge about entrapping people by use of emotion, sham and manipulation.
