Noted Thanks for sharing Cal 10% is not bad but not good either as it is endangering the cute little critter Tarsier and has caused changes to eco- system as well as flooding. I think that the ones that are resposible for the tin mining should be petitioned to make them aware of the damage being done Samsung & Microsoft. to help in stopping further damage.

Just heartbreaking...soon these once beautiful lush forests beaming with life will all be reduced to a barren wasteland---only a matter of time now. PITIFUL

These greedy bastards care nothing for the lives of these animals or people that depend on this island and forest for their lives. Must fins a way to stop such a cruel act.

The tin & other minerals stripped from Belitung are used in a slew of consumer electronics & have been linked to tech Giants such as Samsung & Microsoft. An area that encompasses around 2,500 sq. kilometers has experienced the worst treatment due to expansion of Oil Palm plantations & tin mining operations, with 70% of the Forest area being cleared, incl. precious patches of mangrove forests. The island’s Deforestation & Mining has made Belitung more readily impacted by extreme weather & other ecological hazards. "In Bangka-Belitung, there has been 60% Deforestation of the mangrove area.”

Thank you. It sucks big time, to put it not so eloquently (!) that we have time and time again destroyed nature and wildlife for our own personal "needs."

"As far as a government response to the issue, the province promised years ago to curb deforestation and provide alternatives to residents outside of the damaging mining sector. However, little has been done." That's completely unacceptable! Thanks for the post, Cal.

Wow. Depressing story, but we need to know about this in order to put a stop to it.

BOYCOTT PALM OIL! Nutella, Hershey's chocolate spread, "no-stir natural" peanut butter, instant ramen, most brands of margarine and microwave popcorn, "yogurt" covered snacks, and International Delight coffee creamer all contain palm oil.
