Winning protected status for key natural areas and habitat has long been seen as the gold standard of conservation. But these gains are increasingly being compromised as governments redraw park boundaries to accommodate mining, logging, and other develop

It's a pity. In my state, our Senators gave away tribal land to a mining company. Now the State Dept of Education is proposing selling Federal land and keeping the proceeds of that sale to put in the education department. I don't see how they can do this but they are. Once that land is gone, it's gone forever.

We have this problem in the US, also. My Congressman is more than willing, and trying all the time, to open up our public lands to oil, gas, and mining companies. He thinks it's a good way to make money for the government, not considering the devastation it would wreak on the environment, the wildlife, or the tourism. Giving it away (per Dianne's comment) is just as bad or worse. Thanks for the post, Cal.

They must all be off-shoots of the "Chippewa Nation". But, to be serious--and this is very serious, we need to preserve, protect, defend what wilderness, forest we have left. For everyone's sake. When the land is "presented" (returned) to the indigenous, it should legally be worded to give them sole rights. It is truly their land---though they don't believe anyone can "own land". They are most definitely the best souls to be "caretakers" of Earth. It is a very bad and sad situation, to steal a thing of beauty, a rare thing that can't be replaced, ruin it to near death and then return a few pieces of it. I have hope and quite a bit of faith that Earth can be saved, healed, renewed. But, it would only happen if we elect Dr. Jill Stein of The Green Party. Bernie is my 2nd choice, and I would hope he'd enlist her aid. Thanks Cal.

STOP THE *SUICIDE ECONOMY*
of GLOBAL CORPORATE CAPITALISM,
of DEMAND for CONSTANT GROWTH and "DEVELOPMENT"
of $ELFI$H PRIVATE PROFIT$$$ for a VERY VERY FEW,
of EXTRACTION AND SUBSEQUENT POLLUTION,
disregarding the NECESSITIES of LIFE ITSELF.
As we know it on this Planet.

Notato con grande tristezza, si continuano a prevaricare i bisogni comuni, per il guadagno di pochi, altro che bene comune, e purtroppo anche in Europa questa è la politica scelta. Grazie Cal

Happening across the world...my own country, Australia is heinously guilty because of wretched Federal and State politicians with their hands in the pockets of developers and industry magnates. Greed driven, short sighted, unethical, inhumane, selfish........
