For Americans burdened by a sense of history, something once unthinkable has happened. The United States has elected a black president.

America has elected a person who represents America, who is neither black or white, but of both races! This election tells us one thing, it's time to look beyond skin color/ethnic background to the person within!

If tomorrow all the things were gone,
I’d worked for all my life.
And I had to start again,
with just my children and my wife.

I’d thank my lucky stars,
to be living here today.
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

From the lakes of Minnesota,
to the hills of Tennessee.
Across the plains of Texas,
From sea to shining sea.

From Detroit down to Houston,
and New York to L.A.
Well there's pride in every American heart,
and it's time we stand and say.

That I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

And I’m proud to be and American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA

It is an amazing achievement, but America is not over racism yet.Five Ways We Talked About Race and Identity This Election is an interesting article that looks at how race played out in the election with Islamophobia, the idea that blacks are more racist b/c they're voting for Obama, and more.

First of all, I want to say that I consider myself to be an open, loving, and accepting person of people from all races and nationalities. Although imperfect, I try to look at things objectively and not through blinders. I question myself when I find myself making judgments, and we all make judgments right or wrong, knowingly or unknowingly.

I listened to the comments made by the press and by people I know about Barack Obama and his campaign, and finally his being elected president. Some things really bother me.

Personally, I don't have a problem with Obama being thought of as part Black and part White. But what really does bother me is that there are many African-Americans in the United States who have lived here since Slavery who are part Black and part White, and part Native. There are ordinary people living today who are part Black and part White, etc, but to people who aren't Black they are considered Black, and we all know that. However, now that it is Barack Obama that we are talking about some people can't stand the idea of his being Black, so now the White part of him suddenly matters, and he is part Black and part White instead of Black. It's amazing...

On top of that I keep hearing this stuff about Blacks being racist because they voted for Barack Obama because he is African-American. Why wouldn't some Blacks vote for him for that reason??? Many have thought for years that they would never live to see the day that something like this would happen!!! I don't get the surprise about that!

At the same time, I also know that some Blacks voted for him because he was a Democrat and they did not want Bush in office again!!!

I think sometimes everything that one reads is not always true for everyone or for the reasons that the author says. Some people like to be controversial, and stir up things so that they can keep old hatreds and resentments going.
