Codex Alimentarius is Latin for "food code." Originating in 1962, it was formed by the United Nations to set global standards governing every aspect of food production, distribution and trade. However, it's starting to become an issue of some controversy. Supporters claim it is a benign and necessary set of guidelines that facilitate the goals of international trade. They say that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is facilitated via this international "food code," because it sets trustworthy standards insuring the quality of food products we import and export.

However, there is a growing body of critics who believe that the Codex Alimentarius is over-stepping its mandate, and it actually threatens to dramatically reduce our health freedoms. Critics also charge that we, health-conscious consumers, will lose our ability to purchase many of the organic foods, nutritional supplements and herbs we take for granted today. They warn that the 60% of the world's population that depend upon herbal medicines will not be able to afford the pharmaceutical drugs that will replace them. The new laws requiring genetically modified crops, pesticides, hormones and antibiotics in foods will be cost-prohibitive to people living in developing nations, and that billions of people may die as a result of these policies. They say that the new guidelines are being influenced by large food, chemical, agricultural, and pharmaceutical companies who will profit from the changes.

In the United Stated our healthcare rights and freedoms are currently protected by a Federal law enacted in 1994 called Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). DSHEA considers nutritional supplements and herbs to be foods and as such, there is no upper limit on dosages. This act protects our rights as consumers and guarantees the rights we currently have. As long as this Act remains in effect we probably don't have to worry much about regarding the restrictive nature of Codex Alimentarius.

What's the problem?

Critics of the current situation believe that there is a good chance that without consumer participation, the US Congress will adopt Codex Alimentarius for our import and export standards, and act to repeal or significantly weaken DSHEA. In fact there are several bills in Congress right now that attempt to weaken DSHEA. Why would they do this? Because the big winners are the large corporations that are able to meet the new standards and/or own patents protected and promoted by Codex Alimentarius. Critics say that these large companies are lobbying Congress for these changes, while assuring the public that nothing much is going to change and we shouldn't be alarmed.

The question is: Is this alarmist claim true? Some people do get worked up over nothing and there are charges of misinformation being made by both sides. Our assessment is that this situation is worth monitoring. It's certainly logical that if there were billions of dollars to be made by large corporations that they would have a vested position in the issue. Codex Alimentarius is published so we can see what it contains, and it's now being implemented in other countries so we can see what is changing there.

Who are you going to believe, me or your own two eyes?

Here are a few facts we received from Rima Laibow, MD:

Codex Alimentarius requires that all meats, poultry, fish, fruit and vegetables must be irradiated by Dec. 31, 2009.
Codex Alimentarius requires that all dairy cattle are to be given Monsanto bovine growth hormone by Dec. 31, 2009.
Codex Alimentarius reclassifies vitamin and mineral supplements as toxins and dramatically limits their dosage and availability.
Many nations have already harmonized their laws with Codex Alimentarius making it their de facto law. This has already been approved by the European Union, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and others.
Codex Alimentarius allows significant trade sanctions to be levied against noncompliant nations.
In 2005 there were five bills submitted to congress to weaken or eliminate DSHEA.

The standards that Codex Alimentarius requires are fundamentally the very practices that have led thinking people to question the sanity of those growing, regulating and producing our food; namely the vast variety of synthetic poisenides, antibiotic overkill, treating food with radiation, changing food genetically, and ultimately patenting life and complete and lawful ownership of all legal foods, by a private enterprise; corporations..... one need not look to aliens, or secret societies to find world dommination conspiracies any longer, they are now blatent. They are manipulating the people in the organizations that tell us what is safe and were created, I thought, to protect us from the very stuff, and the very criminals to humanity who they are now in bed with. The FDA, the EPA, and as far as I can tell most of the rest as well. Even the USDA has made many comprimises to the organic standard because of heavy lobbying by chemical corporations etc... I do not doubt, although I am well aware that most still do, that this is not about protecting us, that this is not about safety regulations, i am convinced that this is about controlling the food supply of the world. Understand that those who are attempting to obtain this control are the ones who will profit from it, while the rest of us will lose the freedom to make rational decisions about the food we eat. The absolute irony here is that the standards that the Codex wants to implement are almost exactly the opposite of the standards that "ORGANIC FARMERS" have adopted. These standards are not profit motivated, they are motivated by a conscious decision to live in a sustainable way, and to attempt to put a halt on the devastation we are doing to the planet. The standards of the Codex ARE profit motivated and although they claim to be ensuring the quality of the food, it seems to me like they are really ensuring the control of the worlds food by the worlds most destructive and decieving beings. Two years away... It is difficult to find quality food today. Most Gmo's are not labeled, and most food producers are motivated soley by profit. Two years and it could be illegal to find quality food, REAL QUALITY FOOD!!! Quality meaning the food is like it was one thousand years ago, full of vitamins and minerals, not a damn polluting experimental monstrosity. How can anyone call these standards quality control standards? They are the damn opposite. I also want to thank you Marc. It is truly amazing to me when I learn about something that is so blatently oppressing our freedoms. I don't seek out enough news I know, but I am flabbergasted that information like this has to be found. It should be everywhere. I suppose the freedom oppression goes hand in hand with information suppresion. Anyway I can tell you that hundreds if not thousands who did not have this info before will have it by the end of the week, simply because you posted and I read. As I said I don't really search through the news, frankly I'm not very good at it, but I am eternally grateful for your finding and bringing this info my way. Truly Thank You!! Namaste

This is a living NIGHTMARE!!! Thank God I joined Care2 else I may have never heard about this horrendous, evil organization called 'Codex".

I am very grateful to have seen this video. I believe what this woman says about Codex is true. It is very easy to be in denial and twist the reality of Codex's affect on our access to healthy foods and nutrients.

I for one am going to do everything I can to stop this criminal organization from threatening our lives and global health!

I can't believe this, yet I can. I had to do a paper on the guy that was the first head of the FDA and he quit because he knew they were corrupt way back in the 1890's I believe. I thought America was the country where we are all supposed to be free. It is the chemical drugs and other chemicals that are causing so much trouble. If natural plants and herbs worked to heal people for thousands of years, I can't see why anyone wouldn't want to use them. It is the pharmaceutical companies that are behind all of this and we somehow have to put a stop to them. The engineer drugs with specific side effects that are purposely meant to cause another disease so that you have to take another drug- which they of course make tons of money from! We just can't let this happen- we will have to rename the country otherwise because it won't deserve to be called America anymore.
