"Domestic animals also suffered from the hurricane. In Plaquemines Parish, cows found themselves literally stuck in the mud after the flood waters surged over the region. On Friday, the Louisiana’s Department of Agriculture announced it planned to drop bales of hay to help the ailing cows, and planned to enlist the support of the National Guard to aid in their rescue.

Animal shelters in the gulf area, many dealing with their own storm damages, have also been overwhelmed by pets separated from their owners, displaced by the flooding or otherwise lost in the storm. The Department of Agriculture has made arrangements to move more than 150 pets. The ASPCA is transferring pets currently in shelters to higher ground and have launched a search via boat and foot to make sure pets in the flood stricken area are safe."
