I once stopped into the Downey shelter to drop off some dog food I was donating. The Downey shelter is operated by the County of Los Angeles, and as such has a limited operating budget because this is not the only county-run animal shelter. Downey is a suburb, a "bedroom community" in southeastern Los Angeles county. They have a lot of animals that need homes! Also, if you live in that area, they can use donations and volunteers, anyone who is willing to help out in any way. But especially people willing to provide forever homes for their animals. I used to work at a hospital near the shelter, which is why I donated dog food to the shelter. But I live 30 miles away and no longer work in Downey. Hopefully people who live closer will step up and help out.
