Good Evening Everyone, on the night of such a horrific event. Avaaz.org has started a petition to ask Pres. Obama to open a serious debate regarding gun control issues in our country. I know the media pundits are saying that now is not the right time to talk about gun control, that we mustn't " politicize" such a tragic event. But I think the feelings of grief and horror that we all share tonight can be the catalyst for positive changes that must be made concerning the availability of dangerous weapons. If the death of 20 innocent children, ages 5 to 10, cannot inspire us to finally bring this debate into the open and foster real changes that will protect the safety of all our citizens, then nothing ever will. Avaaz.org is trying to collect a million signatures for this cause. With 20 million Care2 members, we should be able to work together and reach that goal here on our network alone. Please, go to their website, sign the petition, and pass it along to everyone you know. In the spirit of the Christmas season, here is one chance for us to do something that will truly help to bring about "Peace on Earth, and Goodwill to All". Thanks, Linda Rust.

We need to control guns. There is no reason for anyone but soldiers to have automatic weapons, they are designed to kill, and that is their only use. They try to tell you that "only people kill people". That is nonsense. It is really 'PEOPLE WITH GUNS KILL PEOPLE". It is time to enforce the gun laws and to ban assault weapons. Put a stop to the NRA tricks and pushing guns into hands that shouldn't have them., for the sake of their own greed to collect membership dues from gun owners who don't need to belong to the NRA anyway and pay about $1000 or more per year in membership fees. Stop them from lobbying for less gun control.

This is not about owning a gun for self protection. This is far more important than that. This is about our own rights to move about in public with some sense of safety. No one needs to own military grade weapons, no one with a conviction for a violent crime needs to have the right to purchase a gun, no one on the terrorist watch list needs to have the right to buy weapons, no one with a background of mental illness should be making the purchase of guns. Think about reality not just the duplicitous propaganda from the NRA. Your rights are not in jeopardy, your life may be.

This hurts your heart to the core. What kind of person could do this to sweet, precious and innocent children...a purely evil one, that's what kind! If this kind of thing can happen at a grade school in a small town in Connecticut - at a shopping mall in Oregon- at a movie theatre in Texas - it can happen anywhere. There are no safe places any more. There is NO reason any ordinary citizen needs a 30 round, high caliber pistol or an assault rifle. Anyone that fearful of giving up one of these needs some serious help. Many thanks for the petitions...

Analogy: If you live in a house that has 100 guns, and you reduce the number to 75, it would be of some benefit. But if a crazed person (from one cause or another) wants a gun or a few guns to go on a murder rampage with, he still has more than enough to pick from.
Even reducing 240 million guns say by 25% there's still tons of guns around.
If having so many guns is a 'good' thing and they are thus allowed, you also have to accept all the bad things that may come of it. You don't get to have everything all one way. You don't get to 'have your cake and eat it too'. You have to accept the consequences of your actions and decision, good AND bad..

There is an old adage, though harsh, whoever originated it meant it to be harsh. I don't know if it applies here. Maybe. "You made your bed, now lie in it".

I think it would be perfectly fine for EVERYONE to own a gun, handgun, assault weapon, rocket launcher----IF human beings were perfectly sane and rational. But they aren't.

I wonder what the effect might be if all gun owners were totally responsible for their guns? If the guns are stolen or kill anybody in any kind of situation, the owners are treated just as the person shooting the gun....certainly guns would be secured a bit better and maybe a few would get rid of their arsenals?

Petition signed. It's not about owning one gun for your own safety/protection, but assault rifles that many have more than one gun. One assault weapon is one too many. Why would this teacher/mother have an assault gun is my question? People owning an arsenal are a big problem to society.

It should not be anyones legal right to own a gun A gun is for killing nothing else so if the government there chooses to let someone have a gun he is giving the person a licence to kill You dont need a gun to have some sort of defence in your house in many other countries it is far more difficult to get a gun but when you know everyone else is not allowed them either it takes the fear out of someone maybe pointing a gun at you The only persons that should have firearms are certain police squads and the armed forces Anything else is insane because most people cant be trusted with them There is too many loonies around today

I have not signed as I do not live in the US, I live in the UK where gun control is much stricter and such crimes are thankfully much rarer. From what I understand the right to hold arms is something that is held very dear to US citizens but it appears to me that some really serious consideration needs to take place before another awful incident like this happens again.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your response to this petition, and taking the time to share your thoughts on this issue. Especially thanks to Jelica for the updated list of the other petitions out there. There is a lot of momentum out there to take concrete action to finally do something about gun violence and gun control laws in this country. Now we have to follow through, and it will be a long and hard fight! The NRA and it's lobby has become too powerful and well entrenched to be overcome easily. I think we need to form a Gun Control Advocacy group here on Care2, where we can share our info and work more easily together on this.
