Assult of Calabasas Boy Not Being Investigated as a Hate Crime

Society & Culture  (tags: discrimination, hate crimes, ethics )

- 3104 days ago -
Students in a middle school in Calabasas, California with red hair are being assaulted. Reports say that certain members of a group on facebook, inspired by an episode of South Park have targeted kids with red hair. Is this not a hate crime?

There is the well known discrimination of race, color and creed, but it appears society is not prepared to prosecute assailants who attack fellow humans becuase the color of their hair. What is equally as disturbing is that parents are allowing their middle school children to watch an adult animated series which has thrown out all "polically correct' behaivors. Yes, South Park is on when middle school children should be in bad but I also am not a fan of nay hate crime. How the local law enforcement not consider this a hate crime is beyond me. It will be my intent to create a petition to the school district to review their policy of their students' bevavior for the protection of their community.

This "persecuting of gingers" has happened in the UK, too. As a female with auburn hair, I've never been taunted or persecuted (actually, just the opposite), but if this is indeed happening, it's alarming.

Thank you great members of care2 for acknowledging this grave concern in our society. It causes me tears to see anyone persecuted for the the way they were brought into this earth. To me, it is the greatest insult to the human race. For those in charge of "keeping the peace", to not charge the suspects for a hate crime causes one to wonder why our society is the way it is. For those who join me as a warrior for unity, peace and love I consider myself blessed to be in your spiritual presence.

This is indeed very disturbing, and alarming to me. While we are just recovering from the news of the gang rape of a young lad, from a school dance, and it being videotaped, I happened on this story. This has NOT happened here in Texas (my district), but it's good to put in the back of our minds that it may. What in the same Hill is going on, that the kids will go on Facebook, read this, and do this kind of thing (assault!) on another student(s)??? The originator of the Facebook group was a 14 year old boy who explained he "meant as a joke." This is NOT a joke when another person gets assaulted, harmed and beat up!!! I view this as a HATE crime, and the person(s) who did this (originator) should be prosecuted in a court of law. How kids are acting towards others concerns me greatly. TY, Stephen for this.

I find nothing funny about the story lines of South Park or any of those other idiotic shows. There is nothing funny when people are ridiculed. As each new one came out I checked it out and turned to Animal Planet. At least there animals act like animals.

So has Barry Schnit and Facebook removed the Group and the Account of the individual who is advocating this violence? If not then Facebook needs to be bombarded with people Flagging the Group and the individual. Facebook does not respond nearly as fast as Care2 regarding harassment, or bad behavior.

What can I say my beautiful loving friends! I feel a connection of great energy here. There is so much darkness in the world and yet I feel so much love and concern for our communities, countries and world. I will prepare this petition immediately and be prepared to support it. I live close by Calabasas and have actually been to this school, interviewing a teacher regarding an insurance matter. This is supposed to be a very conservative community, very, very republican and right winged politicians. In fact the Ronald Reagan Library is within a "stones throw" from Calabasas. So much for bring up children in a conservative atmosphere. When I heard on the news this Am, it struck me very wrong. I am taking action and I hope you do also with your signature on the petition.

Muttering darkly something about willful ignorance. Thanx Steven and yes it is a hate crime. The sad part is that we have to pass a law or go to court for something that should be glaringly obvious by now.It seems there is not enough hate in the world for them they want to add some more. And then have the nerve to look surprised when someone calls them out on their blind stupidity.

When people do not have self-respect, self-worth, or value themselves as a beautiful creation of the Great Spirit, then these types of behaviors and attitudes are a result. We, as an entire Human Race, need to teach these good moral values to the young ones while there is still time.

Sick people (emotionally, mentally, and Spiritually) do sick things: sick attitudes and behaviors that are fear-based. When we hurt another person like this, we are also hurting ourselves because we all are, ultimately, ONE. The antidote is Love, and Love has no room for fear

I do not know what people are so afraid of .....

Yes, please do send me the petition, Stephen.

This is sad. Where are the parents that they do not know what their teenagers are doing on their computer?
I haven't had a teenager at home in a very long time it seems, but when it comes to the internet...we kept the computer in the livingroom where we had full visual observation of what it was exactly theu were doing.

I was raised that if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. It's what we taught our children.
WE taught our kids to love one another as they would want to be loved themselves.
We taught them to listen, have thought and consideration before they opened their mouths.
WE taught them that no friendship is worth harming an innocent person no matter their friends were telling them.
WE taught them that violence is a cowards way to deal with anger and disappointment, and if you can't talk it out with the person you have a problem with...bring the problem to us....we would worl it out together.

I just don't understand parents today that they don't know what their children are doing....whats wrong with this picture?
Where are the parents?
This is so wrong in so many ways.

The "South Park" episode described redheads as "evil" and "soulless".
I have always loathed that show and many others. My children are not allowed to watch such rubbish. I'm not blaming that episode, but certain adolescence are impressionable... Peer pressure is great now a days..add in a lack of leadership qualities and WHOA, all hell breaks loose.

Thank you, for bringing this story to my atten., Stephen.

With our politicians and hate groups like Fox Views and Rush, etc. they are setting the examples for others to follow. It seems to be getting worse, and if someone is different than you, it is now becoming OK to attack them. Our leadership has to change, it starts on top with congress. Look what they are doing, and see us slowly errode. And a lot of this has to do with the "religious right" which ceretainly is not following the words and houghts of God (or Jesus for that matter). It is up to US to change it, not the one on the left, right, behind or in front of US, but US......We the people. IF you say or do nothing, it means you are in agreement with it.

Think about that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

South park is not the greatest programme young children should watch especially if this is promoting violence against others... this is deplorable and it is a mindset that needs to be changed... education all starts at a school going age.. parents need to instil values into their kids.. this is shamefully lacking when I see what is happening around me.. we never experienced the unruly bad behaviour of kids as we have today... we need to learn to love one another as this would cover a multitude of hate

I don't watch broadcast TV, and certainly not South Park. My son does, however, and my understanding is that this "ginger" business was comedy to show how ridiculous & arbitrary most prejudices are. I don't believe we are facing an upcoming epidemic of hate crimes against "gingers". Rather, a group of kids looking for a target used an idea from a TV show. Those who are inclined toward violence are likely to find "inspiration" from many places.

What is disturbing in this to me is how the very same tools we use as activists were used for bullying & organizing violence.

It is beyond my capacity to comprehend the violence, the hatred, the lack of feelings or emotions young people have for their peers, themselves, and their adult leaders. Rather than getting better, youth seem to be getting worse. My daughter is always telling me something that is happening in her step-daughter's class in school. She just turned 12, and I cannot believe some of the things that these 11, 12, and 13 year old kids know about and do. I realize we cannot watch our kids 24/7/365 but when a 13 year old girl is pregnant, how can that NOT effect other kids? Parents need to get their heads out of the sand, they need to stop some of their adult happenings, and spend more time knowing where your kids are, what they are doing. and reign them in at this age. We take a huge lifetime responsibility when we have children, and that should be there forever.

South Park is an ADULT show well known for making fun of the many varieties of human stupidity. Too bad the students who attacked redheads - and half the people who commented here- do not get IRONY or PARODY. I hope the writers from SP will come forward and say "if you are too stupid to know a joke when you see one, don't watch this show." We don't need another 1950s show where a character steps forward to say "So you see, kids, never do xyz." Has anyone (preferably a behavioral scientist) bothered to interview the attackers to discover their motivations? Until then, let's keep our platitudes to ourselves. My guess is 'pack behavior,' but I may well be wrong.

Juliet, I do believe that South Park probably meant it to be a joke. The problem is that many times young people and perhaps others don't get it. That is why it may be necessary to make it clear that it is irony or parody.

what upsets me is the boy who started all this on facebook was 14 and has his own account. why does facebook allow children at 13 to have accounts. they are too young and not mature or responsible enough.
parents are so irresponsilbe today. no parent should allow there child to be on the internet whether yahoo, facebook, twitter whatever without that parent knowing what is going on.

Precisely, a stupid show Juliet, imo. Oh, I get humorous & satire very well and 'SP' isn't it. So, who's too stupid to know a joke when one hears one? Fact being (v) video games, violent movies, etc, do leave negative overtones.

We may not know the exact reasons behind their (kids involved) motives and many factors may come to play. Also, importantly is to not play the blame game. Many children grow up with a firm foundation inplace... children from good homes/people, BUT not always do these children make the right choices.

Again, thanks, Stephen.

Where in the hell are the parents of these screwed up kids? what are they learning at home? I am well aware of peer pressure with kids-but it is up to the parents to teach the proper lessons. When my son was small there was an episode of the Simpsons that I found offensive. I knew this because I watched what my son watched on TV. We had a discussion and the Simpsons were not allowed on tv again. It is called parenting.

My dear follow warriors for a better world and unity with all. Since this news came out yesterday AM while I was at the gym, working out, I have done considerable research into the subject of "Gingers" (red heads). Unfortunately I have seen many Youtube videos on the subject. The subject of having a disease called "Gingervitis as a red head is appalling. That People with Gingivitis have no soul. What is this world coming to? here is a link to one of the nasty videos on "Gingervitis: Please note that I have created the first of two petitions on the subject. The first is called "Protect our Children from Hate Crimes" addressed to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department and the Chief, Leroy Baca. The second one which I will get to next week will be sent to Facebook through Barry Schnitt and or other representatives whom I will research. If any one of you have knowledge of the people in power at facebook, please let me know. We are a long ways from peace of mind on this subject. Yesterday in the evening news on out local channel, KABC the mother of the 12 year old boy was interviewed and she was in tears. PLEASE SIGN MY PETITION "PROTECT OUR CHILDREN FROM HATE CRIMES! You will find it under the Human Rights Catagory and please forward it to your friends. I just wrote it and it is already getting global attention from Greece. Thank you!

I'm not sure that targeting children with red hair is a hate crime but it is certainly a form of extreme bullying. My Dad & late aunt had bright red hair and my Dad was called Ginger. They were not picked on for red hair!

My kids hate South Park and considering that they watch everything, certainly makes a statement. As for TV, children are affected by what they see and the makers have to ensure that they behave responsibly. I object to them refusing to do so as it just entertainment.

Tuesday November 24, 2009, 1:26 pm it's red hair?!!! Will this kind of sick/bad behavior ever end? I'm with you, Kat, on willfull ignorance. But we much also look to our society. We have people creating sick and twisted video games that are nothing but hate and killing. Our children are being programmed to be unempathetic to everything and everyone around them. Our movies are nothing but flesh, hate, kill, blow-it-up, and any other twisted thing they can think up to desensitize both adults and kids alike. In our sick society greed is good, hate is condoned, violence is encouraged and any thoughts, feelings or a display of empathy to animals or humans is seen as weekness. Our society is corrupt. It reeks of it. Sadly, it has, and is, poisoning our children. I hope something will be done about this hate crime towards children with red hair in CA. But I am not holding my breath. Sorry gang, I am feeling very cynical today.

I will certainly sign your petition Stephen. The school in question should have a firm policy against all forms of bullying. They should teach that no bullying - for whatever excuse or reason - should be tolerated, and they should instill in their students that they should treat others as they would wish to be treated themselves, and to accept that though Human beings are diverse in colouring; be it skin, hair or eyes - we are all one family and need to get along and live together in harmony.

There is a sub-culture here in New Zealand that holds that 'Gingers' be treated as a focus of ridicule - not just in schools, but among the general population. There is no hate attached, more it is viewed as 'friendly banter', but people with red hair are made to feel as though they are different - less even - than everyone else, and this has an effect on their self-esteem. It is a form of bullying that if directed at those of a particular skin colour, rather than hair colour, would be deemed unacceptable. But it is unfortunately regarded as a joke.

Discrimination at schools and on face book is extremely wrong and encouraging bad behavior in our youth. So much so that they become brainwashed like the masses and do not know how to discriminate between right and wrong. Not only that they do not learn how to become strong within themselves and to stand up for what is right but with the influence of pathetic shows like south park etc they learn nothing of the value of another human being and thus lower themselves to an animalistic level.
Thank you Stephen!

This article is from England...and it's damn near a year old....says something now does it not??

Britain cracks down on neglectful parents

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Parents in Britain who refuse to pay child maintenance could have their passports and driving licenses confiscated without a court order under tough new laws aimed at cleaning up the welfare system.
The Welfare Reform bill, which will be debated by lawmakers on Tuesday, also seeks to nudge single parents and people with health problems into employment and to make the long-term unemployed work for their state benefits.

"For those who choose not to support their own kids, we will not stand by and do nothing. If a parent refuses to pay up then we will stop them traveling abroad or even using their car," said work and pensions minister James Purnell.

The government has dubbed the changes the biggest shake-up of the welfare system for 60 years but it has also come under criticism for tabling the reforms at a time of soaring unemployment and slumping economic activity

I have read responses here and feedback in personal messages sent to me that focused this issue on the parents. I have said in my first comment in this article that I believe the parents must be looked at also for what we say in my line of work,-- "neglect supervision" that can lead to the parents of the victim filing a law suite against the parents of the suspects for negligence as they have failed to supervise their activities, what they see on TV and the computer, etc. which led to the assault. I am certain they have already looked into this. Therefore it is also my opinion that investigation by law enforcement should include the parents.

Yesterday was "hug a red head day". Not sure how successful the action was. I saw nothing on the news last night. I guess we will have to send a petition to Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of facebook. He recently boasted about the fact that facebook now has 350,000,000 members from all over the world. Web Sites should be held responsible if they provide a venue for people to create groups such as the one that generated this hate crime. We should be promoting world wide global peace and unity, not assaulting people for the way they were born.

WHAT IS A HATE CRIME ? Is it not when you are discriminated against because of Race, Creed, Color, Nationality, Sexuality, Sexual Identity, Gender or Handicap? If that be the case, then red hair often times ( although not always) is a trait of the Irish such as are freckles. This means that these people are targeting a particular secter or group. Either way, even if they are NOT targeting the IRISH per say...they are "targeting" a particular group which are...."People with Red Hair" and that is DISCRIMINATION and discrimination falls under the guidlines of "Hate Crimes" so therefore these people who are committing these acts of violance against these people who have red hair need not only to be charged with assault, aggravated assault or whatever other charges can be handed down but also to add the charge of HATE CRIME to their record and to be handed the maximum penality punnishable by law. The City Officials need to DO THEIR JOBS and make sure that the POLICE OFFICERS DO THEIR JOBS and follow thru with these charges and abide by the laws that have been set forth and voted into effect by the people of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.. DO YOUR JOB!

Hate begins at home. A child is either taught to hate by his parents or encouraged by their tacit acceptance or lack of concern when he learns it from peers or media. Like the song from "South Pacific" went, "you have to be carefully taught."

People draw inspiration from their environment, whether it is their family, media, school or things they encounter daily and we all take part in educating each other by pointing out the good way in life.

Let us stop pointing hands. Parents or teachers or whoever we are. Let us learn that if we want this to stop, we should start walking our talks with open hands, and humble hearts.

No guarantee that it would work, but at least for those who are touched by our action, we made the difference.

i know both matt and trey (creators of south park) and they're good people. they've been successful with the series because they reflect a lot of what really is going on in the world and magnify the things we hate to admit about ourselves. it's sad that any person would ever be victimized because of something they see on tv. my heart goes out to this person.

You know, I just have to say one thing about me! I am an old hippy and PROUD of that fact! My hair is long {way past my butt} and straight and is pure white...until about 10 years ago I started dying it pomegranite red! It is bright and has natural highlights where the white {or greay} really picks up this dye! I also had my bangs and other parts of my hair bleached with cherry engine red and it looked hot! Even an old 54 year old woman seemed to pull this off. All sorts of people on the street would compliment me on my gorgeous hair. I couldn't imagion being the target of such abuse! Kids in high school, preschool, elementary school are experiencing insane, horiffic tragedies that I do not understand! I saw an news clip on MSNBC a couple of days ago where a young boy was being kicked out of school because of the length of his hair. The parents are taking this all the way to the Supreme Court if they have to, as he is growing his hair out until it is long enough to give to Lockx of LOVE as his aunt is going through Chemo and he wants her to have his hair made into a wig for her. The school system said O.K., IF IT WAS BRAIDED AND DID NOT GO PAST HIS EARS. This poor kid has a pony tail on top of his head and his parents are backing him all the way...To the Supreme Court if necessary! O.K., I'm done! I should have known a simple noted and thankX would never sufice for me!

I can't keep my mouth shut up on this one! I am 54, an old hippy and damn proud of that! My hair is pure white, or it was until about 15 years ago when I dyed it pomegranite red! It is long past my butt, and I had fire engine red highlights put in my hair and solid red bangs! I only received complements on my hair from all sorts of society, young..old..rep..dem..everyone. Why does the elementory,pre-school,highschool kids have to go through such redictious discrimination as this? I saw a story on MSNBC or CNN two mornings ago about a child who was being kicked out of school because of the LENGTH of his hair. I saw the photo of him and he has a pony tail on top of his head as the school has now said he could continue classes if his hair was braided and did not pass his ears! His parents said B.S and are taking it to the SUPREME COURT IF NECESSARY! If I remember correctly, he is 8 years old and is growing his hair out to donate to LOCKS OF LOVE, as his aunt is going through chemo and he is passionate about his cause. He is an 8 year old child! I can now imagion him being bullied in school with some group of haters cutting it off for him!

no one seems to focus on the parents of children who bully. these kids wouldn't be such imps if their parents were doing their job right.

i got to sound off again on this. i came from an EXTREMELY violent upbringing, but the one thing i would never have thought to do was to be a bully. i was taught in both school as well as outside of school to always mind my manners to EVERYONE. parents especially need to spend more time with their offspring teaching them positive values and there needs to be more demand on the part of schools for a zero tolerance on bullying.

over 30 years ago i remember getting the snot beat out of me by a bunch of girls that were racist against any one that wasn't mexican and running with their outlaw gang - this happened right on the school grounds - and the teacher watched the whole thing - it was very disturbing as i got one punch after another and would look up to see that lazy bitch of a teacher with her hands on her hips just watching nonchalantly from her class room.

so zero tolerance on bullying - both at home and in the classroom - if parents don't have the time to instill that in their kids, THEN DON'T HAVE 'EM! they're not little trophies!

o, I watched that episode - well, part of it, I was zapping with the remote - , I found it stupid (but then I think south park not very clever...)

actually a certain ... ill will towards redheads is nothing new, sadly. some time ago people with red hair could be discriminated in certain areas, because of a legend that said Judas Iscariot (yea, the one of the 20 silver coins) was red-headed (which I always thought strange, as none of the Jewish people I knew were red-haired - at the time I thought it was only common in Nordic people - I was a kid, OK?)

But like I said, that was something of the past. These days almost everyone is dying their hair red - or reddish...

but this whole situation is just not to be accepted. what's next? attack the freckled? the green eyed? the stuttering ones?? back to humiliating and bulling of left-handers?

grow up, kids!

and what or where on earth are their parents? do they condone any of this?
not raising their kids right, that's all I say.

@They say that December 8th will be, " HUG A RED HEAD DAY". Are they making a scarstic remark or are they being sincere?

Ewwww. I like red hair, and I like dark skin, and I like lots and lots of various characteristics. But I'd never want a "hug this 'characteristic' day." That's just wrong.

Besides, what if the red head doens't want to be hugged? Then we'd have law suits for assault. I HOPE this isn't a real day that's being considered.

I'd sign a petition against that if someone could prove that it's real.

I can't "view site" but I've heard about the bullying that is now becoming popular against red-heads. Why does discrimination seem to be on the RISE? Or are the oppressed just being more vocal?
