Noted, signed, tweeted, shared. Don't like HSUS position on these issues. I am not going to support them until I find out more. Michael Vick should NEVER be tempted by owning an animal.

How can any orgainisation support this animal-murdering low-life, Michael Vick? And to now say he's fit to own an animal because he now cares!!! What a load of bulls**t. He's only ever been sorry that he got caught, no more no less.

This hideous monster, along with those that got him off, should be lynched and tortured to death. Filthy low life scum - this one really doesn't deserve a place on our earth.

Got this back from the HSUS....
Hi,

You have received the following feedback on your petition, "The HSUS Supports Gas Chambers/Michael Vick&Vivisection,Should We Support The HSUS?", on ThePetitionSite.com:

Hi Diane,

I work at the HSUS, and wanted to reach out regarding your petition. We do not support gas chambers, we actually work to have shelters stop using them, by providing grants that cover the cost of the transition. As for Vick, what we support is ending dogfighting. We cannot go back and change what he did, but there are kids out there that listen to him, and don't listen to advocates, and he is stopping them from heading down that path.I'm unsure what you're referring to re: vivisection-we are committed to reducing, refining and replacing animal models in testing and research with the ultimate goal of ending invasive research on animals. This site doesn't allow me to paste in links, but please don't hesitate to email me and I can send you links of examples demonstrating the work we're doing on all of these issues.

got this back from the HSUS......

Hi Dianne,
Thanks for being open to hearing what I have to say, I appreciate it. From reading the petition, it focuses on a few different things, so hopefully this covers everything, but if not let me know!

Vick
What he did was terrible – and as I mentioned before, no one pushed harder for him to be held responsible for his actions. With regards to his dogs & fundraising, we were expecting to have to pay for the dogs care, as we do in most cases, and sent out the email. Shortly after sending out the email, the judge ordered Vick to pay for the dogs care (1 million total) which is very unusual in a case, but because of that we pulled the fundraising appeal. Vick had around 13 or so dogs that were other breeds. We took custody of them, and then adopted them out through our friends at the VA Beach SPCA. We now have him talk to at risk youth about dogfighting – both you and I know that dogfighting is wrong, however there are so many out there who don’t know that. Those are the people we need to reach – the ones who are next in line to get involved. We continue to do outreach on many different levels, and this is just one angle of our attack on the issue of dogfighting. We’re pushing for stronger legislation as well, that would make it so that minors were not allowed to be spectators at animal fighting events. This, in addition to raising awareness, tip lines, dogfighting busts, outreach and education, will help us shut down this cruel so called sport.

Dogfighting Cases

As for our policy on dogs from fighting cases, we have since changed our policy. In 2009, we changed it to recommend that all dogs from fighting situations be evaluated as individuals, as many can go on to be wonderful companions. As we continued to do dogfighting busts, we formed the Dog Fighting Rescue Coalition, which is focused on helping rehab dogs from these situations. They work to provide enrichment to the dogs while they are often boarded while awaiting court rulings, so that once they are released they are able to go to rescues and eventually be adopted out. It’s pretty cool – I was fortunate and was able to foster a dog from one of our fighting cases, and seeing the amazing strides he made while with me was wonderful, and of course him finding a great home! Here is more information about that program: http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/animal_rescue/facts/dogfighting_rescue_coalition.html

Getting A Pet Around the Holidays

Our approach to adoptions during the holiday season, is that we urge people to adopt, not to purchase at a pet store. Pet stores and online animal dealers cater to impulse buys during the holiday season. Instead of buying a friend a dog for the holidays, we encourage helping them adopt an animal – offering to pay the adoption fee. Here is a release we did about that: http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2010/12/dont_buy_dogs_as_gifts_121610.html and http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2011/12/make_the_holiday_season_a_1222011.html

Katrina

We continue to help the Gulf states – not just after Katrina, but also during Isaac this year. We’ve continued to give grants to continue the work being done in those states, ranging from funding new shelter buildings, to spay and neuter programs. You can see more information here: http://www.humanesociety.org/news/news/2011/08/six_years_after_katrina_hsus.html

Pit Bull Type Dogs:
As mentioned above – they are wonderful companions, and we oppose BSL. Right now in the state of Maryland, we’re working to help residents affected by the recent ruling, which you can see here: http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/dogs/protect_maryland_dogs.html

Gas Chambers
I didn’t see gas chambers mentioned in the petition, but since it’s in the title I did want to mention that we are opposed to the use of gas chambers, and work behind the scenes with shelters to stop using them, often issuing grants to help cover the cost. We need to also focus on the end goal of not euthanizing adoptable animals, so through our work with the Ad Council and Maddie’s Fund, we continue to be a partner in the Shelter Pet Project, promoting awareness about adoption. Our Pets for Life program works with communities to help people keep their pets, through providing vaccination days, spay/neuter and more. Working with shelters to provide them with best practices, ranging from having foster programs to good cleaning protocol, are just a few more of the examples of how we work to on this front. This blog post from Wayne really goes into more detail as well: http://hsus.typepad.com/wayne/2012/07/saving-pets.html

I hope that helps clarify our position on these issues – I really appreciate your writing back, and please let me know if you have any concerns or questions, whether now or in the future!
