The state of psychiatric control in this country is terrifying. If you refuse to take part in screenings you are viewed as suspect. GPs are allowed to diagnose "mental illnesses" and prescribe drugs that are incredibly harmful to body and mind, often resulting in much more debilitating situations than they were supposed to be helping.
I propose that the Australian Government launch a thorough investigation into this whole industry. An investigation done by intelligent members of the society that do not have have ties to the psychiatric industry. The industry claims that lay people do not have the knowledge or understanding to pass informed judgement on these ideas but if their data is thorough and reliable any intelligent group will be able to see the logic or not of their arguments that are leading towards the drugging our whole society.

Signed. As I work at a children's daycare, sometimes (not very often though) we care kids diagnosed as "developmental/behavioral disorders" and have some difficulties in cooping with the rules and other kids.
But at the same time, when parents of such kids, out of concern, tell us how their kids are "different" from other "normal" kids, I can not but think that "other kids" also do the same things.

The pharmaceutical industry is establishing long term income/profits from getting children on to these drugs and then making them sick and making more money to treat the side effects with more drugs. These poor babies do not have a chance in hell. Parents...WAKE UP!!!

and Kenneth, they already ARE targetting babies in-utero. I've personally met mothers who have been told that they have a court order to remove the child at birth and neither the mother or any of her family or friends can even work out why. That's the power of opinion in this country right now. Look at my own situation - at the time they said that was because I tried treatment for anxiety when I was 21. I didn't even have my first child until I was 26 and I was on the treatment for less than 2 months before I stopped. And it's been news for a while now that a lot of toddlers are "depressed" or "anxious" and are being treated for them as well as ADHD etc. That's right - 2 year olds. In order to be medicated now, you don't actually have to be suffering anything, just be in a risk category, and in someone's opinion be at "risk" of developing a psychiatric disorder to be put on antipsychotics and drugs used typically for schizophrenia and other such illnesses - which by the way, are hugely overdiagnosed.

and sadly @Elizabeth S, we can't wake up. They take our kids for disputing them and medicate them for it while they're in foster care and use that time to work out what else is "wrong" with them.

As if a list of criteria could address the inherent uniqueness and mystery of each person, or their heritage, upbringing and home life. Looks to me like teachers & doctors would rather have robots than humans in their classrooms & clinics. We humans are a varied, confused, messy lot, but we're also creative, fascinating, fun, brilliant and interesting. That shouldn't be drugged into oblivion.

People have long complained about government being in their private lives----how much more private can you get than some gov't. sponsored program test of your kids that allows them to make an authority decision about who are the 'healthy' kids and who aren't (such as the name of this program 'Healthy Kids Check' suggests)?.

What a sad reflection of our society... no acknowledgement or empathy towards parents and the fact that raising children is HARD work. No one even contemplates the effects of modern life, the pursuit of a "dream-life" purely based on money and the artificiality that is brought with this. Life is empty if the only goal is acquiring "thneeds" but hey we need to keep filling the pockets of the 1% with our slave labour... and children are at the end of the receiving line... and what do we teach them, what will be the consequences of this long-term?
Changing the social structure would be too hard, easier is it to implement a short-term solution involving shoving tax-payers money towards the pharmaceutical industry and their little helpers, just categorize and pop some pills... so much more convenient... though, for whom?

We are so afraid of anyone not being 'normal'. But we still don't have any idea what normal is. One thing is certain though, when we label as children as 'not normal' these labels stick for a long time. Let's stop this. Signed.

Kenneth L (314)
Monday June 25, 2012, 6:05 am
Vicynthia, there is no proof that any premature baby has bipolar or will have bipolar in later years. That's number one. Number two is 'bipolar' is a term created by a psychiatrist in the early 1900's. It is one more of their 374 'mental disorders' in the DSM, their book of mental disorders. Like 'caffeine-induced disorder' and others. Number three is there is no scientific or medical test, or brain scan or imaging, that proves any such thing as 'bipolar disorder' in any human being.
Incidentally the psychiatrist who created the term 'bipolar disorder' was Emil Kraepelin, who was a German psychiatrist in the 1920's who was a strong and influential proponent of eugenics and racial hygiene. He advocated for the purity of the German race and blamed the Jews and other 'inferior' human beings for much of society's problems. (sound familiar?) And who do you think used this ideology later...Hitler.

Kenneth L (314)
Monday June 25, 2012, 6:14 am
Mild or severe mental stresses and thoughts and feelings are real but that does not therefore EQUAL what the Psychiatry calls it, or what they do to 'treat' it. The one does not necessarily equal the other. There are lots of other views about it..

Kenneth L (314)
Monday June 25, 2012, 6:24 am
(Technically, Kraepelin invented the term 'manic-depressive' and another psychiatrist later changed that term to 'bipolar disorder')

HAving worked with children for many years I can tell you they are not totally knowledgable about child development. The medical profession and the drug companies have too close a relationship. They tell you to wash hands and that is what they do to each other. There is something in this for both. The medical profession seems to have no sense of ethics far too often. I say this I confess out t of their willingness to condone testing on animals but any doctor who would see fit to prescribe drugs to a child who sleep with the light on or is shy is either incompetent, greedy, or both. I slept with my light on for years; my daughter slept with a nightlight as well. She is an amazingly competent 25 year old person now who has more sense than who are much older.
Leave those kids alone and let them do what they need to do-be themselves.

Signed! What do these idiotic doctors want? Do they want to turn everyone into an automaton? Each individual is different - and if someone wants to dye his hair half purple and half bright orange that's his prerogative! As long as someone's quirks don't interfere with the rights of others or violate the law, they can do whatever they want, from eating dog food for breakfast every day of their lives, or combining enchiladas with chow mein, or tasting 3000-year old grain out of an Egyptian tomb. If these drug companies had been around for thousands of years NONE of the amazing breakthroughs that have occurred in any of the Sciences or Arts would have happened during that time. Great minds are usually definitely eccentric.

Have you ever read about Issac Newton, one of the world's greatest scientists? He only ever laughed once, he was VERY much a loner, found it painfully hard to communicate, and spent years and years on esoteric and ultimately fruitless research into the Bible - the drug companies would have had him zombified from childhood - and the world would have been much poorer as a result.

(Oh and by the way, Isaac Newton did one other excellent thing apart from the Principia Mathematica and so on - he invented the catflap, so his cat wouldn't make him open the door while he was concentrating on problems... Hooray!).

Completely in sane, these big brother sellers: don't let them controle the mind on our expense. It's just what sickens this sociaty. Patricia, you're so right about Newton and with him many other great minds. He might have had some adhd, the silent version...the dreaming kind and other qualities. Who's problem is this any way.
I've had classes in front of me with kids completely in apathy from ritalin and such. Watching the clock for taking pills at fixed times. While needing to learn structure by being in the class and taking part of live itself wich is hectic now adays. Lessons are already structured in time and in lots of planning, to much in Holland...difficult to let things flow and grow: How does one get to know himself while also adapting to growing under the pressure of medicine. Like a pack of dogs we are able to correct each other if we stick out more and be natural. Humans have always found unnatural ways to control things they fear.
Don't let these powerjunks make junkies of our kids: they need to grow strong with their own specifics.
Money should be spent for those who ask for help during the natural growing process later and on people that can guide them finding their boundaries..

Sorry... I can't get into the site to sign for some reaon or other, but I have noted this and will pass on. This is so totally insane! Most children who are brought up in this generation of parents who believe in the child 'expressing himself' at all costs and haven't quite got the hang of the fact that their children are only children and need to be taught what is acceptable and what is not, are obviuosly going to have some children who appear to be a bit freaky.. That is. NORMAL! I DO think that some of the 'behaviour problem children' who might even be diagnosed with autism, ought perhaps benefit from their parents watching " Tth Nanny' and getting some tips. on discipline...It is never to young to begin to show children the way that our society epects them to behave so that they won't be in danger of some lunatic assessing them as abnormal and medicating them! .. Anyway... loads of kids are quite disgusting when they are little as they just just simplybecause they belong to that genus called ' HUMAN CHILD" which is a species known to exhibit some very weird and wonderful behaviou at the best of times. I think that one disadvantage that parents have today is that they always have someone telling them what to do and what to believe and no-one goes by instinct any more. Parents are so OVER- WORRIED about their children and the dreadful epidemic of the 'Helicopter parent' seems to have sprung up. I personally wouldn't let any quack assess any little child of mine, if I was having children now! most politicians really DO need psychiatric assessment, as Rob mrCormac suggests!
