Open Letter from Brigitte Bardot to Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawarta

Madam Prime Minister,

Tha Rae is the center of an appalling illegal trade where dogs are killed for their meat and their skin, in illegal slaughterhouses after being savagely stolen from their owners or taken from the streets. We estimate that 100.000 dogs are killed onsite and that as many dogs or more are smuggled alive from Thailand each year, in terrible conditions, piled up and starved during more than 36 hours, before being brutally killed and eaten in Vietnam.

How come so many trucks can manage to remain unseen from the policemen in charge of the check points at the boarders while there are hundreds of dogs moaning in their cages? That’s the question I sent to His Majesty the King in my letter in April 2011. It is of course impossible that the King, symbol of the cultural identity of Thailand and considered as the supreme guardian of the Buddhist religion, would tolerate such a horror which darkens the image of his country because of a shroud of corruption, cruelty and indifference? All the opposite of the image of peacefulness which is used to attract tourists.

Madam Prime Minister, I am begging you not to let your country remain a hell on earth for the dogs and to do everything you can to stop this appalling and illegal trade. Organizations such as SOI DOG FOUNDATION fight for the humane management of the stray dog population in Thailand. Their work helps to create a harmonious link between the human population and the stray dogs. Please do not let a few criminals who only want to make money destroy the image of your country. This criminal network is easy to dismantle: you just need to use your authority to stop this horror. Additionally you must provide the Department of Livestock funds in order to help the dogs rescued from the illegal trade: they need food and care. Over 70% of the dogs rescued from traders and sent to livestock shelters have died there from disease, injuries and starvation. This is unacceptable in a modern country like Thailand.

This appeal is just one from thousands of people worldwide, who are terribly shocked by this hidden cruelty, only motivated by money. A documentary made by Thai activists called ‘Hell on Earth- Thailand’s Dog Meat Trade’ can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edUak-6J7Gk and you cannot remain indifferent to what is currently happening in your country. But you can stop this!

Please extend the courtesy and sense of responsibility to respond to my letter.

Yours faithfully,

Brigitte Bardot

President of Brigitte Bardot Foundation

As a Buddhist country Thailand must respect life of all beings and the Thai Government must introduce legislation that covers ALL animals, birds and other creatures. Bravo BB for all you have done for animals. Wish there were more people like you in the world. It would be a better place.
