I have signed the petition and have written a letter to the President too. I done this yesterday. This makes me sick they are just as bad as China. How can people such things as this is beyond me!!! Do you all wonder how we cry so many tear's for animals when in the world they are nothing but mere dirt of the earth to them. I wish I could take them in my arms and keep them all safe. T hanks Daphne noted with tear's and breaking heart

Mayor Oh Se-hoon
ohsehoon@seoul.go.kr
Address: Euljiro1, Jung-gu, Seoul, 100-744, Korea
Tel: +82 2 735 6060
Dear Mayor Oh Se-hoon
I recently heard that on March 24th this year, the Municipality of Seoul released the Dog Meat Hygiene
Management Policy, a document that lists dogs as livestock. It plans to recommend amendments of the national
law on Livestock Products Processing to incorporate this listing. Korean animal protection groups gathered in
front of Seoul City Hall on March 25th and 26th to protest this decision.
Korea’s hi-tech and electronic products are sold throughout the world, and the so-called “Korean Wave”, which
includes the entertainment, food and tourism industries, has also greatly increased the interest of people all
across Asia in Korea. If dogs are listed as livestock for human consumption under the Korean national
legislation, this would make Korea the first country in the world to legalise dog meat, and would also make
Korea’s President the first national leader in the world to permit dogs to be used ‘as food for human
consumption’. We are afraid that such a decision would not only be a step backward in the development of
civilisation, but would also damage you and your country’s international image and reputation, with a direct
economic impact on Korean products and services.
Dogs are simply dogs, and they should not be divided into pet dogs and edible dogs. Taiwan, Hong Kong, the
Philippines and Thailand have all already legally banned the consumption of dog meat. Although there are still
a few countries and people in Asia who consume dog meat, their living standards are, on average, far lower
than those of Korea, and until now there has never been a country which has, through national law, legalised the
act of eating dog meat!
In the last 20 or 30 years, anthrozoology has gradually brought about a consensus: companion animals bring
psychological and physical benefits to humans. They can give humans intimacy and support, alleviate the
negative health impacts of stress, and also provide protection against some illnesses. Modern day criminal
sociology is also drawing the conclusion that there is a high degree of correlation between cruelty to animals
and domestic violence and child abuse. Once dogs become animals that can be freely butchered for human
consumption, there will likely be negative social and educational impacts on the psychology of the Korean
public.
In order to create a more humane society, and for the sake of the development of human civilisation, we, as cocitizens
of this planet, with all sincerity urge your government to prevent the legalisation of dog eating in your
national laws and to prohibit the consumption of dog meat as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely

Its strange how one culture is so different from our culture... we would never consider dogs.cats, horses, guinea pigs,or many other different animals out there as food yet China & Korea & most countries do... must be becuz they have a huge supply of them ... but they have to try & change there culture for this is NOT acceptable to many humans & never will be... these are not livestock or would they ever be considered here... but again to them it must be... thats really sad... we will keep our voices loud till they try & make an effort to comply to many wishes of countries that want them to stop...still barbarick as ever...

Emails sent, but honestly, letters are more effective. Emails get deleted very easily, but if they get deluged with letters from concerned people like ourselves, the statement has more impact IMHO.

It's hard to reach other cultures in the world when they are raised without compassion. And everybody hates america thanks to bush. I often think we should ask for help on these matters from a Country with a President who has compassion. Any idea? I'd hoped, no, I prayed Dennis Kucinich would take the white house and change the world. Silly me:(

Ghandi once said "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way it treats its animals". The Korean authorities should show compassion and courage and end this atrocious cruelty to the dogs. The people responsible for the abuse, those that condone it, and those who support it by eating dog meat have all lost their humanity and are a danger to society. They should be in the cages!

Hold up, what you are all saying is that our culture is the only "right" culture. That we enlightened Americans should be the ones to decide which animals are to be used for livestock and which ones are pet only? WOW. That is going to offend an awfull lot of people. There are countries that idolize the cow, the rat, the cat etc... In some countries yes, they eat dog, cat, even the occasional primate. Who are we to decide what is food and what is pet? If you really want to do something good, look more towards home. Our own animal welfare system could use a little work. Before we start pointing fingers perhaps we should look to our own faults first.
That being said,
Cruelty is cruelty no matter where and should be stopped. But what a different country considers a food animal is not my business. If they are raising them to eat, OK, but they need to be doing it humanely.

I have watched many cruelty videos - cows, sheep, lambs and pigs as well as chicken taken to slaughter, abused in the process. Heck we treat apples better than live animal. I never understand how they can look into the brown round eyes of a cow or an innocent lamb ....

But when I watched a video about dogs being slaughtered in the fashing accustomed to Korea, and the dog almost being th espitting image of my past pet dog - I heard him cry and whine - ...... all that could keep me from not flying around half of the world was the utterly sad knowledge that he was dead. I saw it on video.
If they legalize the dog meat trade, then more dogs will suffer exactly the same way, as they believe this is the best way to slaughter dog or cat. Just like the Japanese believe live Sushi - filets of fish being cut out off the fish, while the animal is alive and is still alive while being served as decoration to it's own flesh - scwered together. Think about it -

Tradition and culture back and forth - right to diversity and so forth - all that does apply - BUT - cruelty and pain does not know borders. Neither here nor there. Sometimes we find it easier to show compassion in foreign matters and hopefully can graduate slowly to our own attrocities.

I fully agree with Isabella's words:Animal cruelty has no borders. The animal testing in labs in our "civilzed" countries is just as sick and insane as the way dogs are being slaughtered in Korea,Vietnam,China and so on.Furfarms, factoryfarms, organized dogfighting, hunters. There is something evil in mankind, and it's up to us to make people aware of all this suffering, and more than that, make people realize that it's not enough to feel sorry for the animals.People must act against it.

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.
He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.
Thank you Daphne, petition signed previously and emails sent now.

careful of pointing fingers - we are all of the same genetic material and more or less cruel. comments like these could be interpreted as racistic. wether we kill chickens like we do or kill animals by skinning them alive (western world) as Trudi said - even if we just stand by silently we are guilty of not stopping it.

As I see it Daphne, your article is about helping dogs to not be listed as livestock. This has nothing to do about chickens, pigs, cows, etc. These dogs need our help right now and people like Elizabeth should not even bother coming here unless they want to help on this issue. Other posts help other animals. What they do to them just gives me nightmares. So I feel Elizabeth needs to stay away from here because she has angered me over her lack of care and help on this. All of us are here to help in every way we can. I thank everyone here for their help and especially Daphne for all she does for the animals. A true activist.

Thank you Daphne for posting.

Coment to Elizabeth M.:

You sound like it is better to start to get things better in the West and let the Asians go on with their animal cruelty. If you do not know who you are, to make decisions and tell other people what is right or wrong, simply do not do it. If I am not wrong this is about animal cruelty in China. Isn't it? So, I do not understand your point. That there is a nice kind of killing? And that cooking and skinning animals alive is a decision of the culture of a country that needs to be accepted? I have the right to critizise countries that do so. So, what is your point?

No matter what country, no matter what animals you want to eat. The only thing that matters is: in which way you treat your "meat" and in which way you will kill your meat!! I refuse to kill any animal, and I don't want some body else to kill an animal for me. Years ago I was also a coward and I was eating meat. I made some exceptions: NO rabbits, NO horses...only pigs, cows and sometimes a chicken. I never felt alright buying and eating meat, so I eat less and more less meat. I find out the truht about meat, and I have taken a pledge that I will never eat meat again as long as I live.
While we ourselves are the living graves of murdered animals, how can we expect any ideal conditions on this earth?
