I was aware of this, and one dog was made famous for this during the time of the death of Bin Laden. One dog was with the Seals during the military manover, the dogs name was Cairo.

This program has existed since the Viet Nam war. My late husband handle a scout dog in Viet Nam and they (my late husband and his dog went together to the Army Jump School at Fort Benning) The dogs are very humanely treated in this program. Unfortunately that is not true of all military dog programs. Thank you, Marilynn.

Thank you Marilynn! I am hoping that these loyal, brave dogs receive benefits (like health care) when they are retired. They deserve to be treated like the heroes they are rather than just classified as 'equipment'. There is an effort being made in Congress to address this. For those on Facebook, you can follow

Noted Marilyn! I have read about these dogs and their owners and they are truly faithful companions!! I think I also read a sad story on some of the dogs how they are abandoned after giving their lives too which is sad.We owe them everything!!

Thank you for posting Marilyn ! and thank you for the link Ann! I agree Judy and Carol - we owe them everything! For centuries, dogs have been immensely valuable to our species on so many levels.

These dogs had better be treated wonderfully and adored in loving homes after having to go through things like this! I had no idea they were used this way.

Animals have been used for many years on the front line for Decoys. So sad and a cowardly doing. The dog in the pic looks like it just pee'd and pooped on the enemy line while in flight, lol.

no worries marilyn. i've really never liked the idea of using dogs for anything. they are sent into situations that humans are too afraid to enter into. that makes no sense to me since humans are better armed.

Sadly humans might be 'better armed' but they lack the intelligence of how to handle any given situation! These dogs are treated like 'dirt' when retired, if not just abandoned (by the government, NOT the handlers!) or euthanised. May they all find loving forever homes! Yes, congratulations on your first story M!

Noted. Great story, thanks. I've been skydiving for 20 years
and many of my friends jump w/ their dogs. I don't. My dogs
are bigger than me! Also, am afraid I would endanger them.
It's one thing to get myself killed doing extreme sports but I
won't endanger my pets.

Thank you Marilynn, this is a great story. War dogs do not get the attention they deserve. Here in our little country town of Goolwa, South Australia, there is a lovely marble memorial stone dedicated to the dogs who have fought so bravely alongside their handlers. Most days new flowers are laid there in their honor!!

There is a website dedicated to US War dogs:
http://www.uswardogs.org/id16.html

These animals are my fellow veterans and deserve as much respect as any human vet. They deserve good homes on retirement, preferably with the handlers that they are so well connected to.

They are indeed amazing but I do not feel that animals belong in the wars of humans. For years they were just left behind and even now it can be a struggle to get them home.

Dogs do everthing that we ask of them and more.
Dogs follow us into war, and they are also therapy for those that come out of these awful wars as well. It is the one species on earth that truly lives to please us. It's good to raise awareness as WE could do so much better by them!

If you want to do some reading there is a good book that just came out called "Soldier Dogs" by Maria
Goodavage.

If we made a fraction of the effort that we expend to make war to INSTEAD promote cooperation and peace, then both children and dogs would be much safer from the horrors of war. War is toxic to children, adults, animals, and all living things.

CONGRATULATION dearest Marilyn for your first news, and thank you Ann for the link.
I believe that through violence, you may "solve" one problem, but you sow the seeds for another. War is out of date, obsolete!
Instead Air Force dogs Iím for happy - piece dogs and peaceful coexistence of all creatures.

and robots.

All the animals that are trained in war and rescue do not get the acknowledgement more the support they are deserving of. Even cats were listed as war hero's. We owe a lot of gratiude to these and all animals in the world.
