In honor of 50th anniversary of West Side Story, the Philadelphia Orchestra recently performed the music along with a special screening of the film. The sound track allowed for only the original actors and vocals to be heard, while the musical portion was supplied by the live orchestra playing simultaneously with the film , which was shown on a huge screen above them. It was fabulous!

Interesting how Portorican men and women in America see life differently:

Maria:Here you are free, and you have pride
Tony: As long as you stay on your own side
M.: Free to be anything you choose
T.: Free to wait tables and shine shoes

From what I read, these days more American will agree with Tony.

A couple of years ago, West Side Story was playing on Broadway. I watched clips from it on YouTube. Still, Rita Moreno is the best Maria I've seen; her acting, dancing and singing are supreme. Although other actors in the movie were excellent, Rita has stolen every scene she's in. I watched this movie several times and I have not find a single scene where she didn't give everything and then some more... what a dynamite.

Thanks, Marilyn. Watching this again was an immense joy.

Well, half a century and we have almost nothing to show. This scene is still amazing as it was when I first saw it.

As a dancer, WSS was in my life 3 times. I choreographed and directed a musical version in 8th grade for the spring play in our grammar school. Leslie Uggams was Maria in the next National Tour, and Debbie Allen was Maria when I helped reconstruct, performed in (Pauline and Anybody's) on tour and on Broadway in 1980. The thrill here was working with Robbins and Bernstein...Worked with The American Dance Machine for 7 years and actually used some of the choreography here as period training material in daily classes. The Founder/Director of this company had been the original Anybody's, Lee Theodore.
