Every drop of this pure, artesian water will be exported for at least 15 years if the bottled water company, NZ Pure Blue, has its way. The most precious natural resource will be bottled, processed, and shipped overseas.

More information about this place - a hikers' dream hike!

The Blue Spring at Te Waihou Walkway is internationally acclaimed with water so pure it supplies around 70% of New Zealand’s bottled water.

The spring is fed from the Mamaku Plateau where the water takes up to 100 years to filter through; the resulting water is so pure and clean that it produces a beautiful blue colour while being virtually clear.

The walk to the springs follows a track alongside the Waihou River, through wetlands, across rolling pastoral land and features views of small waterfalls, native bush and the famous Blue Spring with glimpses of trout along the way.

Water from the Blue Spring flows at a rate of 42 cubic metres per minute and could fill a 6 lane (25 metre) swimming pool in around 12 minutes. The water temperature is a constant 11 degrees celsius throughout the year.

Mother nature filters this water for 100 years before it rises in the Blue Spring!
And a certain amount is already tapped for bottling (70% of NZ's bottled water comes from here at present).

But a bottling company would draw ALL - or almost all - this upwelling for a bottling plant ... For the next 15 years. And much of the "excess" would be exported. Big $$$$$$$ for the few.

What would be the impact on the river along which hikers walk?

PLEASE sign!

Greedy scumbags! Some corporations, it seem want to suck the planet dry until there is nothing left. What will you do then, CEO Hogg? Sorry, but your well-paid goons won't do your bidding when your money and stocks are nothing but buttwipe. You'll be barbecue.

Thanks Evelyn. I asked Dandelion to post this yesterday but you got here first. Why is NZ allowing this? Money, I guess, but some things can't be replaced with money.

Harry - I guess you don't have any problem with having access to safe drinking water, otherwise you wouldn't be so categorical!

There ARE places and times when bottled water is necessary. For example, in a city near me, last week a major water pipe broke, and hundreds of households were without water for 3-4 days. The city provided bottles of water until the homes were reconnected to the water network.

But I agree that the "snob" value of bottled water needs to be tackled, strict controls applied to sale of bottled water (much of which is not safer or healthier than tap water!!), and so the demand can be pushed right down to level of "need" rather than "like"!

I'd go along with "Boycott bottled water except when there is no alternative access to safe water" ...
And restrict transport of bottled water over enormous distances ... polluting through vehicle use!

I have been twice in NZ and I think it is a wonderful place .Unesco surely has told them that they will loose the privilege to be a Heritage. Clean water is everywhere and it does not need to be the water of this unic place. . Famous is already their "Antipodes " water from the Otakiki Quelle. Australia has the "Cap Grim" from Tasmania, there is "Flillico" from Japan, the "Cape Karoo" from Capetown, and "Fidji Water", the "Veen Velvet from Lappland", the "Ty Nant" and "Heartsease" from Wales and the " Speyside Glenlived", all are very famous water and there is no need to spoil and destroy this beautiful place just to have another special water, 1 water from NZ is enough and for normal bottle water there are certainly places enough in NZ.
