Neuroscientist says social networking sites change children's brains, resulting in selfish and attention deficient young people, their minds characterized by short attention spans, sensationalism, inability to empathize and a shaky sense of identity.

Seems like opinion and not real research, so let's see some proof.

I dont think I agree with this either. I have 2 grandsons that too young for the internet and they both have the same problems of minds characterized by short attention spans, sensationalism, inability to empathize I think the internet and all the electronic entertainment contributes but does not cause these issues. Childern do not use thier imagainations like they did a couple decades ago. Now they have to have everything electronic to keep thier attention.
I remember playing outside for hours making forts, playing cops and robbers, cowboy and indians, hop scotch, jump rope and being totally happy. I loved being outside with friends and had to be forced to come in for dinner. Now you cant get kids outside. they are too glued to TV. computer games and the internet.

Children do not play imagination games anymore and they spend less time interacting socially. Young adults spend a lot of time on the computer and playing games, not going out. There is also a rise in drinking and "ladettes", loss of respect for maturity, authority, disabled, animals rights and other vulnerable members of society. Sports such as "happy slapping", roasting puppies and heaven knows what else is increasing amongst the younger members of society.

How much of this is due to the lack of personal contact because of the increase of places like facebook or the changes in society eg the increase of immigrants or various depressions, is not yet clear. The breakdown of the family unit also plays a part. Various types of autism are being diagnosed which condition means they are unable to relate to people.

What worries me is that the best way to start investigating this is - torturing monkies...............

The research was done over a period of 30 years, which made them finally realise how damaging PCs and TV to a young mind, especially during the most impressionable years.

Unfortunately too many young parents do not see it that way. TV and PC games act more as an inexpensive babysitter.

How MANY young parents supervise their children on the choice of TV programmes, or what sites they can visit on the Net.

I have seen 11 y.o. on adult sites and was shocked that that is allowed. They often visit those sites to get info abt things they are curious about and don't dare to ask their parents.

Parents do not realise the damage they do to their children by not interacting and communicating with them face to face.
