A study shows thinning in the right hemisphere of the brain may predispose people to depression and cognitive and inattention issues. Thus medications used to treat attention problems such as stimulants might also be useful in the treatment of depression.

The problem is that suggesting a particular drug to treat a newly discovered link with depression sounds bit like jumping the gun. Perhaps this a time, when the new information could lead to drugs that do not cause the harm that many of the stimulants cause.

Some of the issues regarding memory can correlate with memory deficits for other reasons, including learning disabilities. The discovery of differences in the hemispheres of the brain is significant, and perhaps it will lead to treatment and discoveries not yet considered. I wrote a paper regarding madness and creativity, and surprisingly, the artists I studied were often depressed, self-medicated, and often committed suicide. As a creative person, I have to do what I can to keep my endorphin levels up in order to function; medications work well for many, but are not options for me for many reasons.

I am pleased to hear there is progress which will lead to hope for those with depression and their loved ones.
