President Obama issued an executive order and two presidential memoranda last week proclaiming a new transparency in the workings of the federal government. His sweeping reversals of torture and state secret policies are about to face an early test.

We must worry about state sponsored terrorists, not from without but from within. Who are these people that could willingly do such harm to others. Too much history is available, too much truth that torture is used for the sick satisfaction of those inflicting the torture, not because it produces results. This should shame us all.

Obama already approved the continuation of "extraordinary rendition" (CIA kidnappings of people to take them to brutal regimes like Egypt, to be tortured). So I don't expect other secrecy policies of Obama to be any more tranparent or better for human rights than that.

"Early test" or not Tom...A Spaniard in the works is not such a bad thing?...

Spain has begun a criminal investigation into six of Bush and Cheney's torture lawyers, and our own Justice Department has got some 'splaining to do.

You see, it's actually required by our laws and by international law and treaties that we prosecute our own torturers. It's not optional.

It doesn't matter whether our television stations can handle more than one news story at a time, or whether our President wants to avoid anything that might limit presidential power, or whether Eric Holder thinks this is a good year for torture prosecutions. It's not optional.

Spain is enforcing the law because we are illegally failing to. Spain is child services come to tell us we're not running our household legally, and Spain is obviously right.

Of course Americans want prosecutions, but we have failed to compel our government to do what we want. In the absence of anyone to thank in Washington, we should thank Spain. We should send thank you notes to their courts and newspapers.

Those of us who can vacation abroad should do so in Spain. We should buy products from Spain, eat Spanish food, and learn to speak Spanish, because our basic values are not spoken in English anymore. Well, American English anyway (the language of "enhanced interrogation techniques" and "looking forward, rather than backward").

Britain, too, has begun a criminal investigation.

Seems like everyone except the U.S. is on the case?...Eat Spanish, it's good for you!

The British High court has demanded the documentation for the Case of Binyam Mohamed...like sharks the predators are circling round to demand the truth...and the USA has been guilty of rendition, torture and running illegal concentration camps...the world knows it...Cheney boasted about it...so it is time we saw some action to bring those responsible to the International Courts.

David, I wouldn't get to excited yet! Thanks for the advice but I'll stick with America...she's still the best bet for me.

I am not sure how I like the wording "because our basic values are not spoken in English anymore. Well, American English anyway (the language of "enhanced interrogation techniques" and "looking forward, rather than backward")." Honestly, I take great offense to that. Not mad..just offended. Have a pleasant evening.

Are you a citizen of the world or just a brainwashed U.S.'patriot' Suzanne?...There is a big world out there if only you have the time to pull down your star spangled banner and look a little beyond your hallowed shores...It is 'out there' and looking in with contempt...Proud to be American?...Only an american can!...

Have a great day!...

David, that statement paints all Americans with such a broad brush. So than yes consider me brainwashed for taking offense.
