Last fall, California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 2, a law that prohibits keeping egg-laying hens in cruel and intensive confinement in California. But eggs from hens in other states who are kept in the very same conditions are sold here.

Don’t All Egg-Laying Hens Deserve to Stretch Their Wings?

Soon the California Assembly will vote on AB 1437, a bill that would ensure that no eggs from hens kept in cages so crowded they can’t even spread their wings are sold in California.

Last fall, California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 2, a law that prohibits keeping egg-laying hens in cruel and intensive confinement in California. But eggs from hens in other states who are kept in the very same conditions that voters have resoundingly rejected can still be sold in California. AB 1437 would change that.

Please take a minute now to send a quick and easy e-mail urging your Assembly Member to support this important bill. Remember to personalize your message with your own words and experiences to make your voice stronger and more effective. Time is of the essence, so contact your legislator today!

After you’ve sent an e-mail, please follow up with a quick phone call politely urging your Assembly Member to support AB 1437. Get your Assembly Member’s phone number here by selecting “Find My District” from the menu and then entering your address.

Get more tips on how to communicate with your elected representatives. And if your legislator responds, please feedback you receive with us so that we can lobby most effectively for the animals.

Please Support AB 1437

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing as a constituent and a voter to ask that you please support AB 1437. This bill would require that all shell eggs sold in California comply with the standards set forth in Proposition 2, which passed with a nearly two-thirds majority last fall. By supporting this law, California voters resoundingly rejected the inhumane practice of raising egg-laying hens in battery cages, which are so small and crowded that hens kept in them can't even spread their wings.

However, fully one-third of the eggs sold in California come from other states, and Proposition 2 doesn't protect the millions of hens who lay these eggs from being subjected to the same cruel confinement voters chose to ban. AB 1437 would prohibit the sale of any eggs from hens kept in battery-cages, no matter what state they were raised in. Please help protect chickens from unnecessary suffering by voting yes on this bill. I look forward to hearing from you regarding your stance on this issue.

Sincerely,

When I see this photo of these hens all "stuck together" it makes me very unhappy that this is happening; realize that the ideal would be for all to be free range, unfortunately the ideal does not work well in the real world; at least, let them spread their wings and have more room when they are caged..support the petition strongly.

This is disgusting, and one of the reasons I do not buy eggs at the supermarket. These people shouldn't even be allowed to sell eggs to the public. I can't help but wonder how many diseases humans get from the food they purchase especially meat and dairy products. When we stop supporting their bankroll, they will take better care of animals....

Yes, it's obscenely cruel some of the treatment and confinement and conditions of animals used for food (or laying eggs). I used to buy only free-range eggs for a while but I have fallien off the wagon (price I guess). But I eat only about a dozen a month anyway and not much meat.
Petition noted and signed.
