California: Improve Hen Welfare and Food Safety

The California legislature is considering legislation, AB 1437, that would protect California consumers from the deleterious public health, food safety, and animal welfare effects of the sale of eggs derived from egg-laying hens who suffer from significant stress and have increased exposure to Salmonella, the leading cause of food-borne illness-related death in the United States.

AB 1437 will require that all shelled eggs sold in California as of January 1, 2015 be in compliance with the basic animal care standards set forth in the Prevention Farm Animal Cruelty Act, which was approved by voters in November 2008 by a 63.5 percent margin. Proposition 2 was favored by voters in 47 of California’s 58 counties and received more YES votes than any other citizen initiative in California history.

AB 1437 was recently introduced and we need to make sure all legislators know about it and about our strong support.

It is well documented that animals raised for food production who are provided at least minimum accommodation of their natural behaviors and physical needs are healthier and safer for human consumption. The stressful, overcrowded, unhygienic conditions in battery cage operations increase the likelihood that consumers will be exposed to higher levels of food-borne pathogens.
