Tell the Obama administration to act quickly to address the effects of climate change on America's Arctic.

I urge your agency to take immediate steps to address the current crisis unfolding in America's Arctic, where rising temperatures have shrunk the ice pack to roughly half its historic size, leaving polar bears and other marine mammals in peril.

There is an urgent need for a bold, comprehensive action plan that is based on a full scientific assessment of the health, biodiversity and functioning of the arctic ecosystem. Until this assessment is completed, your administration should prohibit all new industrial activities in the Arctic, including all new oil and gas activities in priority conservation areas both off-shore and on-shore.

In addition, I urge you to:

- Work quickly to recommend that Congress designate the Arctic Refuge's coastal plain as wilderness;

- Withdraw the Teshekpuk Lake area from potential oil and gas leasing, recommend the area to Congress for permanent protection, and review other potential areas of the Western Arctic for permanent protection; and

- Regulate black carbon generated from the use of diesel engines, oil and gas flaring and marine transport in the Arctic, which is contributing to rising temperatures by absorbing sunlight.

It is imperative that you act quickly to slow the assault on the Arctic by working to reverse the effects of global warming and demonstrating a commitment to a sustainable energy future for America.
