Food For Thought

To: the President of the United States, Members of the U.S. Senate and Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, see more...your Governor, Members of your State Senate, Members of your State House, the President of the United States, Members of the U.S. Senate and Members of the U.S. House of Representatives

Teach children how to save our natural resources, feed our hungry brothers and sisters in the world, respect and protect animals, and take better care of ourselves. We can be more compassionate, healthier, and smarter by simply changing our eating habits. Here’s the recipe for success--reduce or eliminate completely the amount of meat consumed daily, and seriously think about adopting a vegetarian diet.

Did you know:

* It takes about 25 gallons of water to produce a pound of wheat and 390 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef!

* An average steer consumes 16 pounds of grain and soy to produce 1 pound of steak!

* An acre of beans, peas, and lentils can produce 10 times the protein of just one acre of land devoted to raising cattle!

* Grain consumed by American livestock could feed 800 million people!

* If the entire world switched to a vegan diet, our current food production would properly nourish 7 billion people. As it is now, only 4 billion of the world's 6.5 billion people are adequately nourished!

There's a lot of evidence that vegetarians are healthier than non-vegetarians.
Consider some of the following research findings:

* In a study of more than 70,000 people, death from heart disease was 30 % lower in male vegetarians than in non-vegetarian men, and 20 % lower in vegetarian women than in non-vegetarian women.

* Studies in Germany and Finland suggest that people who eat non- animal products may live an additional 15 years compared to their animal-eating counterparts.

* Non-vegetarian men and women are twice as likely to develop diabetes than vegetarian men and women.

* Vegetarians have lower blood pressure than non-vegetarians.

* Vegetarians are at a lower risk for obesity than non-vegetarians.

* In one study, people who ate meat for several years were three times more likely to develop signs of dementia (mental confusion) than Seventh-Day Adventists, whose religious beliefs do not permit them to eat meat.

* Non-vegetarians are twice more likely to have diverticulitis (a disease of the intestinal tract) than vegetarians.

Let’s implement and promote a vegetarian diet in the curricula of all public schools. If we take the time to educate our children properly perhaps they will not repeat our mistakes. We have a wonderful opportunity to make a positive change in the world, let’s not squander it.
