Livestock now use 30% of the Earth's entire land surface, including 33% of the arable land which is used to produce feed for the livestock. Raising animals for food requires 10 times as many crops as we would need if we simply ate the grains directly.

Subject: Eliminate Waste of Food and Land

Dear Representative,

According to a US Department of Agriculture (USDA) statistical bulletin, 80% of the agricultural land in the US is used to raise animals. Time Magazine reports that we feed 10% of the grains and cereals grown in the US to livestock. This is very inefficient because most of the feed gets wasted and only a small amount of the protein is converted into flesh. Animals require many times more calories---in the forms of grain, soybeans, oats, and corn--than they return in the form of meat.

The FAO reports that livestock now use 30% of the Earth’s entire land surface---mostly permanent pasture, but also including 33% of the arable land, which is used to produce feed for the livestock. The University of Chicago notes that the raising of animals for food requires 10 times as many crops as we would need if we simply ate the grains directly.

If we were not using all that land to grow crops to fatten chickens, pigs, and cows, we could reforest millions of acres in the US alone. Or, we could use the grains that are not wasted on livestock to feed all the starving people in the world many times over.

I urge you to protect federal and state reserves of land by not aiding and abetting the agriculture industry to continue to abuse our federal and state land reserves.

Thank you,

[Your Name]

Abuse is so common on state and federal lands... those that are greey are often the culprits, and they need to realise we don't need all these cattle, and domestic animals on these lands as there are just way too many, they all pollute the environment, and take away from natural resources. let's hope they are open for correction

I'm sorry -- this is a dumb petition. It is so vague -- saying to protect federal lands from agriculture is totally generalized term without specifics or remedial actions.
How about the fact that the BLM (bureau of land management) leases grazing rights for $1.35 per month for one cow and calf or $16.20 a year -- and that rancher is on his ''honor'' to report the correct number of his cattle grazing on federal land (this also includes national forests). Furthermore the BLM surveys or estimates the amount of grass that will grow in the year and allots 1/2 to wildlife. however, the truth is that there is so little grass left that there is little wildlife like deer left. Put together what really happens is that the BLM says only 50 head can graze in Township section A and B - this is an example. The rancher grazes 70, reports 50, and no one notices that there are no deer left. Also the rancher might only own 50 acres but can get grazing rights on 100s of acres. If you are 'new' in town, so to speak, there will be no land for you as the oldtimer already has grazing rights. there are no bids, just good ole boys.

Several years ago had an idea that a group could raise enough money for a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal advertising, "All the grazing land needed for a cow and calf for $16.20 a year. Contact your nearest Federal Bureau of Land Management or National Forest today".

i don't believe or view animals as polluters , i don't agree when they accuse cows of belching greenhouse gases ; animals are very pure, sacred & clean & enhance the air & nature fully. until people give drugs, chemical medications , GMO fodder , steal their souls, water & land rights.
if you want to take that land cfrom the animals for humans - then those new humans better be the reincarnations of all the animals who were there.
if the animals were respected & not killed, more rainfall would occur, more vegetation .... place to roam.
people & animals need free space to walk & exercise - you could create hiking paths around these areas & fields.

Michelle and ALL,

I believe all petitions are good, yet some are more detailed with specifics.

MY TAKE: 1. We the People Own the BLM land. About one third of the land in America is BLM. We own most if not all the Giant forest. Yet we seldom hear anything about that ownership.

The same is true with all the off shore oil and gas We the People own that too. The airwaves, the shipping ports, NASA and all their stuff good bad or not worth a plug nickel. We own over 700 land mass military installations around the world.

We own the Corps of Engineers and all their stuff that is vast. We own all the Highways and byways, all the federal buildings here and around the world. We own most if not all of the Federal Reserve Banking system. Now they say we own a percentage of the BIG BOYS stuff that fell during the Wall Street scandal or as most believe a $50 trillion Ponzi scheme.

MY TAKE :2. Now we own a lost Generation of our youth. They are flesh of our flesh and blood of our blood and they are more precious that all the riches in the earth.

What must we do about their stolen years to be nurtured by us and understand that they too are rich beyond measure?

MY TAKE :3. Now take a look at all we own, then set back and ponder a bit and try to make some sense out of it. Yes We the People are Wealthy but we must assert our rights of ownership. Just as those indigenous people around the world are doing. It is our land, forest, etc. But until we make a legal stand and demand that We are in Control of our own destiny for our posterity sake we will sink into oblivion as just one more bunch of folks marched to the death camps screaming WHY ME?

MY TAKE :4. The Greatest man to ever live said, “You are in the world [system] but you are not of it”. Again He said, “If you know of me you shall know the TRUTH and the TRUTH will set you free” NOW there are two kinds of people on planet earth today. The BEAST OF MANKIND is the cannibal wanting to eat us. That group has had many leaders in the past the current one is David Rockefeller the Bilderbergs group call David the King of the World. And all bow down to him behind closed doors. They believe that they have us over the barrel for they believe some polls that We the People have been “dumbed down” and now is the time to take there axe and cut off our heads. The next group of people is we; We listen to our conscience and conduct our lives as civilized people who care, have concern, and cry as the many good and kind people like us around the world are taken as fodder for the BEAST to devour.

MY TAKE: 5. Now is the time for US as UNITED FOLKS here and around the world to Arise and Shine. Demand our rights for we are many --- and those that comprise the BEAST are few.

MY TAKE: 6. For each edification check out on my page WHO IS THE ONE. Our Creator is the only ONE that has omnipresent power to effect changes the real change that is needed now.
And that change must begin in us KNOWING THE TRUTH. Once done we must all JOIN HANDS AND STAND UP AND SHOUT OUT ENOUGH OF THIS MADNESS. Then each take their spot at the “round table” of human rights of life and rule righteously.

Mr. Max Baucus Personal Empire Builder while Stealing from the American People

The Real Dirt on MAX BAUCUS
Health Care Reform led by him----Don’t think so

PLEASE MAKE PUBLIC NOW http://www.globallearningnj.org/mine2.htm

Apart from all the destruction, lost government revenues from the law have opened some eyes. According to the Mineral Policy Center, mining operations on federal lands produce $3 to $4 billion worth of minerals each year--and the public doesn't get a cent. Royalties, which nearly every other developed country charges, would add hundreds of millions of dollars to the federal treasury.

The 5,000-acre Stillwater Mine outside Yellowstone National Park holds platinum and palladium deposits worth $30 billion. The Johns Manville and Chevron companies have jointly applied to buy the land for $20,000--less than $5 an acre. "Clearly, the American people, who own the $30 billion worth of minerals, ought to get a fair return on that," Lyon says. "And the land should not be sold," he added. "That's in violation of the Federal Land Management Act, which says that the land policy should encourage the retention of public land, not create in-holdings."

The Clinton Administration, under the aegis of deficit reduction, last spring asked for a 12.5 percent royalty on minerals extracted from federal lands, but Western Democrat Senators convinced the President to back down.

Industry has countless arguments against real reform. They claim that royalties and expensive environmental measures will close down mining operations everywhere. They present scenarios of thriving communities turned into ghost towns, skyrocketing consumer prices and general economic disaster. But Lyon replies: "Mining has never been a sustainable industry. It's always been boom or bust. We think that the idea of reform putting the industry out of business is a red herring." The 1872 Mining Law only covers one-third of hardrock mining in the U.S. The rest is on private, state, or tribal lands, where the industry has no trouble paying royalties, and companies often lease lands to each other, charging royalties ranging from five to 20 percent. Even the family of Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) gets royalties for mining on its land. Yet Baucus has told Clinton that collecting royalties from federal lands will break the industry. "If royalties are good enough for the Baucus family ranch," Lyons asked, "why aren't they good enough for the American people?"
