Environment Takes Back Seat To Comfort, Convenience

Society & Culture  (tags: society, culture, americans, environment, convenience, comfort, survey, discovery, research, interesting, computer, ipod, cell, phone, microwave, choice, business, marketing )

Most Americans wouldn't give up their iPod, microwave oven, air conditioning, cell phone or computer, even if they thought it harmed the environment. 38 percent chose convenience, 35 percent chose comfort and 26 percent said the environment came first.

How true; Mary, in France everybody is OK for windmills but ... not in their village (they "make noise", etc..) :/

I don't have an iPod, cell phone, microwave or air conditioner. No car, no cable TV. But I do adore my computer and the Internet, which I would argue saves me energy and expense in many ways.

We have collectively put selfish concerns over the good of the whole for too long. But the good news is that we are here on Care2, looking at our habits, and trying to make a change.

I think the most important words in that article were these--
if they thought it harmed the environment.
I feel that if they said -If it was proven it harmed people and or the enviroment- would U give them up? Or perhaps if the question had been asked in this manner- would it change how U use them or even open ended what would U do if it was proven- the answers would have been a lot different-interesting story Tom

Sherbet modern day conveniences are a curse aren't they just, but lets give some credit, some on going ozone free like our fridges, and God willing they will follow with some of the other gadgets...

This has been my thoughts for a long time. People just want their little "bubble" to be safe and easy and don't want anything that rocks them out of their comfort zone or which causes them to change their ways.

I have to have the a/c here in the desert where temps get over 120 in the summer. My luxury/necessity is the computer/internet and my contact with the world. I don't use the cellphone, microwave, dishwasher and other conveniences. We plan to go solar one day so we do no harm to the environment. Thanks Tom.
