USDA statistics show that, in 2008, the US exported 56,731 horses to Mexico and 77,073 horses to Canada for slaughter, resulting in the second highest slaughter total since 1995. Diners abroad eat American horsemeat shipped from plants across our borders.

I cannot believe with all the farm animals that we cruely raise and slaughter for food that we need to kill and eat horses too.

ALL ANIMALS HAVE TO BE BANNED AND OUTLAWED FOR FOOD CONSUMPTION.

It sickens me how many poeple think eating animal flesh is normal, right, ethical, natural and will acutally get angery and fight for the right to kill and eat animals. it is sick, barbaric, and a form of cannibalism. it has to stop.

Thanks Tom.. At least there is one civilized country out there. This is a very sad comment on our government and on the 'people' who support this exporting of horses.

Thanks tom and hopefully EU will come through with their plans. I can not see eating a horse, dog, or cat, I know so much of this goes back to the ole time, but we don't live in the ole time come out of the ages and stop doing, dumb stuff, like eating compaion animals. They were here to give us give and comfort, and we should be here to return it to them.

I will keep saying it - we have to STOP people breeding these horses in the first place. And all animals are capable of being companion animals - it is so insulting to the millions of cows and pigs and chickens and goats and seafood that so called animal lovers continue to disregard them as equal to cats and dogs. You can't have it both ways people! If you love animals, you don't eat them, any of them.

Thanks Tom, the cruelty behind horse slaughter is truly unimagineable, I've seen too many pictures and read too many documents on what the true horrors of this "industry" are. We must thank the EU for doing what we could not. We still need to pass HR503 and S727 to truly protect our horses from being transported to slaughter.

Thanks for all your comments everyone! Like it says at the end of this article, “We don’t need to eat horses. Horses are for riding, jumping and doing a whole lot of great things. They’re not food”, concluded Skjerven.

Well, Tom you actually said what I was scrolling down to day....DITTO, we don't need to eat horses "Horses are for riding etc..."

Gotta tell you once you have ridden a horse, you always remember the true enjoyment and wonder of it...This has to end, not just end because of bad meat, but STOP PERIOD. This is so WRONG!!!

Horses are a TRUE Enjoyment, they need to have to have protection against this...AND, I ALSO AGREE WITH ABA, WE NEED TO PASS THESE LAWS TO PROTECT THEM FROM BEING TRANSPORTED TO SLAUGHTER.

Take away the profit and hopefully we'll save the Horses:)
Thanks for the great news Tom.
Also I did do research on this last year and prions are in all meat (prions are what cause mad cow disease) here are some of the links and diseases.

http://www.namiscc.org/newsletters/July01/borna.htm

Borna disease is common in horses, where it can cause encephalitis. It's also been known to strike birds, cows, sheep, cats and dogs, producing behavior changes that are eerily similar to depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders in humans. Named after a town in Saxony (now Germany), where an outbreak of encephalitis in horses crippled the Prussian army in the late 1800s, Borna disease has been recognized in recent years as an emerging illness among humans.

Am I at risk for trichinellosis?

If you eat raw or undercooked meats, particularly bear, pork, wild feline (such as a cougar), fox, dog, wolf, horse, seal, or walrus, you are at risk for trichinellosis.

Let's do absolutely everything we can to get this senseless and totally inhumane slaughter stopped once and for all and forever. I'm praying about somehow getting a sanctuary started or keying off somebody else who has. Every single horse...every single animal was created by God to life out their lives free of fear and senseless and untimely deaths...just as "humans" expect to. We are meant to be their caretakers...not their abusers or destroyers. Keep up the great work on behalf of these marvelous horses!

Terri. these horses destined for slaughter were not created by any god. They were created by unscrupulous people only looking to make money - or just plain stupid ones who have no idea how to separate their mares and stallion or at least get the stallion gelded. There is not a sanctuary big enough for all the excess animals. We have to get people to STOP breeding - get them to see horses as bigger cats and dogs. Neuter the entire colts.

Horses are our little brothers and sisters, they carried us thru time and space, they brought home the wounded and sick from the wars, they were great companions and warriors for native american chiefs, they are legends, they are Sacred,We must do everything possible to protect them from all suffering.yakoke

Growing up as a kid we always had some kind of meat during the week and chicken on Sunday. It's kind of funny to hear that people are killing horses for meat. I always thought they used them to make glue. Lets keep our horses and get those pony rides and riding in the country like we did as kids.
